first time bedding advice?

Im thinking of bedding my sako finfire over the holidays for something to do and was just wondering do I need to remove some material from the stock or can I bed straight onto it? If I do need to remove some would it jut be the base of the stock or the sides as well? If so what would be the best way to remove it, I am a carpenter so have plenty of tools to do it. Im really doing this for practice for my big rifles. Also what bedding compound is best? I have brownells steel bedding kit and brownells Acraglas kits availible locally, which would be best for a walnut stock? On the same note when lapping scope rings do you need to remove some material first or can you just fill it up and put in an old scope to set it and can you use the same stuff used to bed the stock?

Richard Franklin makes a DVD that tells you and shows you everything you ever wanted to know about bedding.

Richard is one of our vendors....Give him a call...

You seem to be confused in just what lapping scope rings is.

Your removing metal from the rings so the scope can set in them equally all the way around with out pinching the scope tube from any misalignment that may have been present. Putting bedding compound on the rings will accomplish nothing very worth while.
When you go to bed the stock you need to remove around a 1/16th of the existing wood all the way around the area where the receiver sets to have a place for the bedding compound to set into, the recoil lug area also needs to be enlarged.
The bedding material is pretty much a personal choice, but either one you mentioned will do just fine.
Check out the Franklin video ........

Definitely get the DVD and when you watch it have a pencil and paper handy because he will tell you things that are important but by the end of the DVD you cannot remember everyone of the items he said was important. Also at www.savageshooters.com in their "Article" section under technical articles there is a article entitled Basic Bedding 101 and it is very informative.

I highly recommend Devcon 10100. I also use Gray Marine Tex for bedding needs. Removing ample base material in a stock is important. Synlube 1000 is a great release agent to use.....Rob

You might also check out http://www.scorehi.com. Good bedding info.
Got a CD that shows you step by step. And it's free! ;)

I would not use accraglass ...personally I can't stand the stuff, too many other good options. Devcon is good stuff but I do not like grey showing on a wood stock if there is too much gap betweeen action and stock, you'll have a 1/16" grey line around your action) I use 3M 8115 to bed and it has ~the same properties as Marine Tex but easier to use, but costs more.

Yes, you can use the same material to bed your scope and I bed all my scopes. I have seen many a scope ring ruined by lapping for many folks make a rocking motion when lapping t/f taking too much off each end and high in the middle. To make sure your rings/bases are somewhat good..set everything up loose and set your scope down in the rings, then when you tighten the rings/bases the scope should remain unbound, then you can bed the scope.

Preacher, curious as to why you believe bedding a scope "accomplishes nothing"? Unless a lapping bar is the same as the scope tube you are using you could do more damage via lapping, IMO.
