First Remington 700 build range results

I am not a fan of polishing chambers.

I have always found that the finish that is left by the reamer gives a good compromise between the case being able to grip the chamber walls during peak pressure and combining with ease of extraction.

This can become apparent when shooting in the higher load limit such as is encountered in Short Range Benchrest. Many shooters cannot explain why their bolt lift is difficult at 3450 when other have no problems. Much of it can be traced back to the Gunsmith putting way to shiny of a finish in that chamber, often to correct for a poor finish during reaming.

Of course, all of this takes extra care during the reaming procedure.

The first rule in modifying stuff is to do to the cheapest component first.

But I keep looking at the reciever cam area and imagining a grade 8 steel pin in there, profiled to match the bolt handle. It could be adjustable by means of different thickness spacers below it and retained by a set screw coming in from the top of the receiver bridge.

Good shootin' :) -Al

I thought the point of “polishing” was more to rough it up than to make it pretty. I hit every chamber with some 320 on a stick for 5-10 seconds just to take the shine off. I’ve even used 180 in a pinch with no ill effects. I really thought everyone did this just to make sure stuff will extract.

I did a coarse ladder test today with 169's and Varget. Looks like it really like 42.5 to maybe 43.5 grains of Varget. 42.5 came in right at 0.5"

And my son finally shot it for the first time today.

I'll do a fine ladder test in 0.2 grain increments next time.

Std deviations as follows:

42 gr: 26
42.5 gr: 19
43 gr: 18
43.5 gr: 5.5
44 gr: 9

Don't know if my bench manners are great but it looks like no rear bag , holding the butt with the left hand, thumb over the stock, wearing a heavy jacket and cheek weld. Still looks like decent shooting. I like to see round and under .500" in a varmint rifle. See if there is a competition shooter at the range and ask if he can suggest rifle setup and holding the rifle.

43.5 seems to be the winner there to me. The flyer the first shot or last? I would play with seating depth on that charge and see what happens or leave it well enough alone and be happy with that. Especially with a hunting rifle.

I think it was the first shot. I shot three, then the range went cold and I shot the last two 5 or 10 minutes later.

43.5 is a pretty standard "go to" load for the 168g class bullets. If I want to load up some "bulk" ammo, I'll use that combo. Shoots pretty good in everything.

The 43.5 grain group had an average velocity of 2704 FPS.

I'll do a smaller ladder group in that charge range. Seating depth was 2.880".
