First Match!

After eight months of training, I will finally be shooting my first SR match at Camp Perry over Memorial Day weekend! Any helpful advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Michael

I remember shooting the Memorial day match at Perry quite a few years ago and as I recall the weather rarely cooperated. They do run a great match there and it will be great Perry experience if you want to shoot the nationals. As far as advice I would say that if the weather does go south just remember, everyone has to shoot in that same weather so dont get discouraged. Also, if they are not to picky on squadding see if you can get squadded with a master or high master shooter and really take good notes. Good Luck!

All the above advice is great!

Treat it as any other day, try not to get excited. Concentrate on "every" shot.

The last local match I won overall in the F/TR class to my surprise. All I can tell you is I didn't focus on anybody else, I concentrated on my first shot all the way through my last shot!

That's the best advice I can give to anyone!

I am still shocked on the overall.

I can think of oodles of advice for the first competition: Insure you are shooting at the right target, breath control,.....all of the above...

I especially like the counsel to billet with the masters and take copious notes!

But most of all, remember that every shooter there was once competing for the first time!

Its been a couple years since I shot the Memorial matches at CP, but be prepared for rain. I would suggest you buy a lightweight breathable rainsuit. I took the cheap disposable rainsuit, I think I got as wet from sweat as I would have if I had no suit on, it can get real muggy there.

Had a real eye opening experience in my first ever SR match, an 800 aggregate on Saturday, where I totally imploded. I cross fired, put incorrect windage on, was late and rushed to the line due to inexperience, in short, totally humbled. I made some equipment changes and mental preparations and recovered for the EIC match two days later on Monday, making the cut for an 8 point leg(Still waiting for the official results, but this is what someone told me when looking at the unofficial posting)
I feel very fortunate to have picked up points in my first EIC match and know there is a lot of things I need to add to my training to be fully prepared to shoot well.

Regards,

Michael

I just left Perry yesterday. The attendance is down this year and really it keeps falling. (Economy I believe) The best advise I can give, after all the great advice on here, is don't shoot for anyone else but yourself. You're not competing with anyone but you. Ignore all the other shooters when shooting as if you're on the line by yourself. Treat each shot as if it was your first shot. Once the shot is gone, it's gone. If it was a bad shot, DO NOT dwell on it. If it's a good one, don't get over confident. Just shoot the next shot. I've seen many shooters destroy the rest of their string because of one bad shot that they could not let go of and it destroyed them mentally for the rest of the string.

Good luck!!!
