first groundhogs this year

MAN!!! I wish we had those big boys out here in California. We have the small California ground squirrel and they are very hard to hit past 400 yards. I have killed four at 800+ yards this year and I am going for the 1000 yard kill soon. I really need to get a good spotting scope for this long range shooting. I have a great pair of Zeiss 15x45 Binos that are so clear and the AWESOME Swarovski 8x30 Range Finder to assist me during these long shots on these small critters, but I really need a large spotting scope to really help spotting the misses. Anyhow, those are some big varmints. I have both copies of Richard Franklin's Death in the Green Grass 2006 & 2008. These are excellent groundhog hunting videos with kills out to 1000 yards. I would highly recommend watching them if you love groundhog hunting. I hope one of these days I can go hunt some groundhogs.

Fuzz,

What kind of wood is that on your stock?

I love it!

Nice job on the cat size rodents-like 6BR said we have nothing that size here in California-well marmonts maybe but they are hard to find.

Good shooting!

MrMister sorry i didnt see your post earlier but the wood is quilted maple with rosewood caps. i'm building a thumbhole stock for my 300 varminter now with fiddleback maple and walnut with a red stag antler for the grip and grip cap. i think you will like it too but its only part way finished. and thanks to you to preacher.

I got my first groundhog of the year this evening. I have been watching a hillside around 100 yards behind my house that I kill 2 or 3 groundhogs off every spring. I keep them from going over the hill and eating my neighbors garden up. I had not even seen any evidence of them even cleaning out a hole. When I came home this evening as I was turning into my driveway I thought I saw a groundhog poking it's head out of one of the holes on the hillside. I slipped into the house and got my Bushmaster AR-15 out of the safe and popped a mag loaded with some rounds that contained 25.3 grs Varget pushing a Sierra 69 gr Match King into the rifle. I put on my ear muffs and slipped out the back door and after chambering a round I went prone with the legs of the Harris bi-pod extended. I found the groundhog standing up broadside to me right at 100 yards away. I cranked the Bushnell 3200 5-15X50 up to 15 power placed the cross hairs on the groundhogs front shoulder and started the squeeze on the 3 1/2 pound Chip McCormick trigger which broke like glass sending the 69 gr MK on it's way. I was rewarded with the wet plop sound from yonder hill and the groundhog dropped like a rock with it's tail doing the straight up in the air shimmy. Upon inspection the bullet struck right in the center of it's left front shoulder and made an golf ball size exit hole out the other shoulder. First 2009 kill.

My Washington rock chucks are downright small and scruffy compared to your big ol' eastern wood chucks! Congrats on nailing those fuzzy critters.

So far am just taking them at under 100 yards with the .22 Marlin, but will be shifting to the .204 Ruger/CZ soon!
