first coyote!

called in first coyote today, shot at about 75 yds. with ar-15 and 50 gr. v-max, was snowing like crazy. called in with dogs squeaky toy? tried wounded rabbit call several times before with no luck. must not be doing something right? anyway i'm pretty happy. will go again after snow.

well, congrats. what inspired you to take a dog's squeaky toy into a blizzard. In fact, what were you doing there! Expect the dogs are really hungry about now. .223?

It's easy to get hooked on coyotes!!!

Did he come in sneaky & hungry, or tail wagging & wanting to play fetch -LOL-

Sometimes they just come... The first time I carried my FX3 coyote hunting. I placed it about 50 yards in front of a deer blind. Was going to give the woods 15-20 minutes to calm down & all the suden out pops a yo-yo. Never even touched the remote, much less turned it on. I thought "Damn this thing works!"

well guys, I had no luck with my mouth calls and I saw clip on you tube where this guy called one in with a squeaky toy so I gave it a try. it worked! It was'nt my plan to go in a snow storm but I have limited oportunities so I took the time I had. I only called for about 6-7 min. and she came trotting right to me, she got to about 75 yds and I raised my gun, she stopped and I took the shot. hit her high on the shoulder, and she dropped right there. I will always remember this first coyote!.

Congrats on your brush wolf! (that`s what my farming relatives in Ontario call coyotes).

Just told my neighbour about this thread and he said I could try his little boy`s rubber ducky next time I go out for coyotes. Don`t know. Maybe we are onto something here. Don`t need all those expensive new-fangled gadgets.

Congratulations. It doesn't always work that way, so cherish this one. Calling can become an obsession. Went into southern KS 3 weeks ago just to call coyotes on a large ranch. 3 straight days of calling with 2 other guys and no one fired a shot. Coyotes howling all around us, saw 4 all together but were too far away and wouldn't come any closer. There were plenty of them there but none wanted to play with us. Drove the 300 miles back home and went again and got 5 to come in that day. Luck seems to play a role somewhere.

first congrats, i am no expert but i have a mouth call i used with no luck, then i talked to an old man that told me how he does it he said to blow as hard as you can for about 15 to 20 seconds and then wait a minute or 2 and do it agian, so the next time i tried that after the first few blast the yote ran out of the woods, missed that 1 thanks to my 10/22. i have not been much but i will say that since trying that method i have had far better luck than before. good luck

Mouth calls can be productive, so don't give up on 'em.

It seems to have more to do with the 'feeling' you put into it. Don't over do it, and change to a different call after a few calls.

You blowing an open or closed reed? What kind of squeaky toy you got?

Use a Foxpro now and have missed two so far not waiting for them to stop. When I was stationed at Ft Riley in Kansas used to turn a jackrabbit call around backwards and make sounds like a lost puppy pulling air in and not blowing out. They would come running in full bore and often two or three at a time. But that is back when I could get 5 to 10 bucks for em. Now can't give em away. Keep at it is probably yhe best advice and move 1/2 mile to a mile after 30 mins or so. Over calling an area can be all bad.

Hello, just a follow up, been out two more mornings with the squeaky call, no luck!. I know there is more coyotes in the area. I think I will have to move around a bit.I will keep trying, I'm hooked!!!. the brand of squeaky toy is made by hartz, I think I've gotten pretty good at making this thing sound like a dying mouse? then again maybe not!. I have two different closed reed mouth calls that I will practice with and use next time out.

Turbineman,
Congrats on the first coyote. Kinda funny because I got on here tonight to say I called in and shot my first coyote tonight. It was right at dark, and he wouldn't come any closer than 200 yds. He stood there looking in my direction for about 5 minutes, so I used a rodent call very softly and he didn't like that. When he turned to leave, a let one fly and he ran like I didn't hit him. When I finally made it to where he had been, there was blood everywhere! That .204 must have exploded in that dog, it was incredible. He made it about 50 yds down into the woods before expiring. What a rush! Again congrats to you, it is a great feeling.
