First Coyote

I got my first Coyote the other day. A friend and I went out at around 5pm and set up on our first spot. He was the shooter and I was the caller. The grass was high so we set up on a tree line that was elevated. We had a 180 degree view in front of us and it was about 300 yards to the next closest tree line. Called with the little dog for about 30 min and got no response. We saw 3 nice deer though. Gave a fawn distress call and they responded. Moved to the next set up and started calling again. Cottontail distress. No takers. About 30 min in we were about to leave. It was about 7pm by now. I gave a howl and what do you know we had at least one real close. Gave some more calls and answered again. Sat and waited then a little male showed up about 50 yards away. The grass so tall we could not see him until he got close. Dropped him. He hadn’t dropped his nuts yet. Would he have left his mother by now? I'm guessing not. He had to be about 3 months old. With all the excitement and tall grass his mother could have been close and we wouldn't have noticed.

On top of that, I have some more exciting news. Richard Franklin emailed me today and said my 6br was ready. It is a Bat sv with a Spencer LV 12 twist cambered by Clay in 6br Lapua min spec. Richard stocked it in a Walnut model 3. It has a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22. I'll post some pics along with my next dog when I get it. I am new at this so any advice would be great. Thanks, Nick

Nick,
Congratulations on your first song-dog. I would rather shoot yotes than anything else. Were you using hand calls or an electronic call?

I just received a new spotlight that mounts on top of my scope and I am dieing to give it a try. I love hunting at night.

Be sure and post a picture of your new rig when it gets in. Richard Franklin is a real class act and builds great rifles.

I was using Rangy Anderson's Lil Dog. Last night I got the Hot dog and Ki-yi. I think I have coyote fever. I have a dewalt cordless radio that I spray painted camo and I plug my ipod into the aux jack and use it as an electric call. I'm going to use this for crows mainly. I kinda like calling the coyotes in with mouth calls. It's a little more sporty, even though they don't deserve it. I can see that it may be damaging to your ears though. I want to "master it" and then I'll proably switch to an electronic or a combination. Does anybody know anything about that? It seems you could really damage your ears using mouth calls.

I'll be sure to post some pic next week when I get my new rig in. I've got some loads with n135 and 75 v-maxs. I'm still waitng on the Fowlers. What would be a good crow bullet? 200-400 yards. I want something that I can scream out there and vaporize the crow with.
Thanks, Nick
