I've been watching 2 LARGE coyotes for a week in the field I hunt in. Last week they held up at 500ish yards, and while my rifles are more than capable, I did not want to educate them. Yesterday, one came out at 300 +. Now that was not too smart.
I had decided I wanted to take my new 6×47 Lapua as I haven't hunted with it yet. Even though I still haven't killed a deer with it yet, a coyote will do. A Berger 105 VLDH @ 3125fps is nasty.
These coyotes we have in the south are big. This one was not the larger of 2, but still looked like a small German Shepherd.
It was moving at a fast walk and I was tracking it. The bullet landed about 6" further back than I would have preferred, but the outcome was the same. I don't like to see anything suffer so I hit it again in the head.
