first build need suggestions (med range .270)

Have decided on building a .270 for target/varmint shooting out to 5-600 yards.

I understand the limited bullet selection and that other calibers are more popular for this kind of shooting.

Plan at the moment is to use a trued Savage action with a 26" heavy barrel in a SSS Varminter or similar stock with a SSS trigger.

Questions:

1) 26" barrel but what twist? many have reccomended 1:9-1:10 twist but after looking on Hart, Lilja, Shilen, McGowan and Douglas websites they only offer a 1:10 twist. Is this going to be fast enough for the 150, 160 or even 180grn bullets? Want to shoot the lighter 100-115grns as well but will give priority to the heavier bullets.

2) Stock- SSS has a very nice Varminter stock that looks like it will work well, are there others I should be looking at? Would prefer to stick with a heavy laminate, non-thumbhole.

3) Action- SSS seems to be the go-to resource for Savage builds. What kind of questions do I need to be asking to get the product I want without wasting their time or sounding like a donkey's rear?

Never built/modified a rifle before, not looking to reinvent the wheel just trying to build a decent shooter without breaking the bank or tripping up on the typical rookie mistakes. Any and all info welcome, Matt.

you may want to check and see what bullet weights are offered . i have never found any 277 bullets over 150 gr. i know there might be some in very limited supply but i have never seen any . the only company that i have seen offering any match bullets is Sierra. please inform me if you find any heavier ones. T.R.

Thanks for the reply. Again, the .270 isn't known as target capable round but there are as number of quality, high bc bullets available.

150grns .531 bc.

150grn .525 bc.

135grns .488 bc.

These type of bullets are primarily what I will be using.

However, if possible I would also like to use:

I realize this is a pretty big spread (70 grns) an if need be I will choose the heavier bullets over the lighter.

Will a 1:9 cover this spread?

Who makes a decent 26" heavy barrel in 1:9?

I second the 1-10 twist , I was able to get consistant .48" groups with mine.

Check out my previous build at http://tcsr.wetpaint.com/page/Members+Projects.

I've since sold this rifle and that sale is currently funding my 6br build.

as i have seen in your reference sites the heavier bullets are hunting tips . i guess i must be to target minded . the bullets that are listed 6.8 i believe they are intended to be shot from REm. 6.8 cal. which is a .277 but intended for slower vel. that being said. 1-10 twist is the old stand by for 270 win. Sharp Shooter Supply will hook you up right!!! I think your trying to play to large of a field, the Woodleigh would need something in the 1-8 twist more than likely but that will be aggressive for a 90-110gr bullets.
The best in between twist is the 1-11, shoots 140gr Bergers real nice for targets and will shoot 110gr bullets also, very good for varmints.

I shoot a 270 WSM in the manner your talking, the 140 Berger is super out at a 1000yrds and the 110gr V-Max will hone out any varmint you can think of.
I'm setting up a barrel for my Savage 270 WSM to shoot the 169.5gr Wildcat bullet that we should see in production in about two months, I'll twist it at 1-9 in a Lawton barrel or Mcgowen if they still offer it in 1-9, they did until the most recent web site change.

Good luck, the .277 cal is way over looked but the up side is there's never a shortage of components.

Thanks for al the good tips.

I've sent a number of e-mails to SSS without a response.

Who else should I be talking to about this project?

The bullet selection as you said is not too good in .270. Since you are buying a barrel you might consider a 6.5 - 06 by necking down your 270 brass.

SSS is a small shop and Fred doesn't get to answer email all that often. If you go to the SSS website, there should be a time during the week when you can call to get technical advice.

On a side note, you might want to look at Joel Russo stocks. Not sure what his current prices are but he makes some stunning stocks.
