First 6mmBR: Which Twist?

This would be my first 6mmBR and I'm looking at the Savage LRPV....

I'd use it for long distance competition at the local range, and for varmint hunting.

Savage offers a 1 in 8" and 1 in 12" and I'd appreciate some input.

My inclination would be to choose the 1 in 8" in order to stabilize a wider range of bullets....but there may be other factors I'm not aware of.....

The 8 twist will shoot up to the 105 a-max,but if you intend to shoot 55`s at squirrels they probably won`t even be close to the lands.....

Hard to have it both way`s.....

Go with the faster 1:8 twist not only to stabilize a a wider range of bullets but to stabilize the heavy bullets you will need to use for your intended purpose.

Get the 8. You can shoot the 95-107 VLD stuff for long range, and use 80gr. Berger match varmints for pest work and short range target.

I have an 8 twist and it will also shoot 65 VMAX along with the 105s

If long range shooting is in the cards then the 8 twist is the clear winner. I primarily shoot 80gr Bergers in my 8tw. Out to 500 yards or so I am very happy with the performance.

The only reason to go for a 12 twist is to shoot the lighter bullets really fast and turn varmints into mist...at shorter ranges.

I'm having my first 6MM BR being built now and after a lot of reading, asking, researching etc I opted for the 10" twist. Most of my shooting will be within the 70-100 grain range of bullets and the faster twist will work with the occasional heavier choices.

Nobody, Really gave you the answer I think you were looking for. So I will give it a try. The 1 in 12 twist is good for shooting out 100 yards to 400 yards with bullets weights from 62grs to 80gr so if most of your shooting is going to be at these distances the 1 in 12 twist would be the right choice. Now if most of your shooting is going to be 300 yard to 600 yards the 1 in 8 twist with 80gr to 107gr bullets would be the right choice. Not that you can't do both with either but the 1 in 12 twist should be more accurate out to 300 yards and the 1 in 8 twist should be more accurate from 300 yards to 600 yards. I myself wanted to have all bases covered so I have one of each. Before you ask if I could have only one rifle which one would I choose for my type of shooting I shoot more a 100 yards than all the rest so I would choose the 1 in 12 twist as 90% of my shooting is 300 yards and under. Either one is a good choice but if long range is what you are looking for the 1 in 8 is the right choice.

Hi there

Ive had a 1-8 twist built with a .74 freebore

I uses it asa fast & flat fox/vermin shooter with 55g noslers & long range with 105g amax!

it makes bug holes with both bullets even tho the 55s are a fair way off the lands still!
