First 6.5x47

i have been wanting a new caliber to shoot in combination with my 6br. I pretty much only shoot in varmint for score matches 100-400yd and will have the occasional 500-600 match.

The gun is basically ready minus the barrel, pr&t hammerhead stock, savage target action done by sss. I ordered an x-caliber barrel to give them a shot. 27in savage bull contour 1.25-1in, 8 twist.

I believe they said they use a jrs reamer which I think is setup for the 130 class bullet. Any tips info would be appreciated.

I ordered some Nosler rdf 130s to try. I also plan in ordering the Whidden click adjust die set. Have plenty of varget and h4350 to get started.

The most accurate bullet I have shot is the 123 Lapua Scenar, meaning small/consistent groups. A little more wind drift than the heaver, higher BC bullets. Little difference in vertical since the lighter bullet can be run much faster. For the "shorter" ranges you mentioned I would shoot the Scenar in my rifle, out to 1000yd. Once I shot the 140ELD for a one mile hit, and it handled the transition to subsonic consistently as we sighted the impacts onto the target. Frankly it seems nearly all bullets shoot pretty well in the 6.5x47, so you need to find out if any one stands out as clearly superior or inferior in your rifle.

I’d shoot 130 Berger Hybrids, but if you’re going to run the RDF I’d suggest starting with a wide and extensive seating depth test, like from hard jam all the way to .100 off.

Varget/RL 15 and 450s, no question there.

On second thought, for no more than 600 yards, I’d strongly consider a 120 or 123 Sierra matchking.

The 6.5x47 is one of those cartridges that can shoot just about any bullet well. I've only shot the 123 Scenars in loaded ammo, and it did very well out to 500-600 yards. Shooting beyond that I would suggest a bullet with a little better BC. I've had good luck with both the Berger 130 and 140-Hybrids. Mostly shoot the 140's as they have worked well for me out to 1400-yards. I'm sitting on a couple thousand Norma 130's, and when I have time, I hope I can find a good load with those. I use Varget and CCI 450's.

H4350 or Varget
CCI 450
Lapua brass

Berger 130 Hunting vld
Lapua Scenar 123
Sierra 120 and 123
Norma Golden Target 130

I have two guns in the 6.5-47 and that’s a list of what I use. I like the cheaper bullets to “bang away” with. They shoot fairly well and are easier on the wallet.
I don’t compete.
