First 2017 Groundhog sighting

Lynchburg VA, 40 degrees F saw one on the hole watching traffic on Rt. 29.

Waiting for May to reduce the population.

Is it true that coyotes catch ground hogs outside there hole and kill them. I heard that is why there is a decline on the ground hog population in western NC and other places? Samuel Hall

I have been eyewitness to this on 3 occasions. Groundhogs don't have a chance. What I was most amazed by was how quickly the coyotes dispatched the 'chuck. Maybe 3 seconds tops and the chucks would be snatched up and limp as a wet washrag and the yotes would head off to the den with it.

And looking forward to seeing a few chucks in the crosshairs in a few months.WD

I haven't seen where the Coyote population is down any here in SW Michigan but, have been seeing more groundhogs/woodchucks than when I was a kid. I've taken a couple years off from shooting them, shot none last year and only 8 in 15, and I can see where they're rebounding again! These critters must breed like no other?

When mankind is gone from the face of the earth there will be two critters left, coyotes and rats. I am not too sure which one will win out between the two for ultimate survival. Everything else beware and that includes our Pennsylvania woodchucks!

I'm also out here in Oregon, (east side) and we've got no shortage of ground squirrels, rock chucks, AND coyotes.

Coyotes eat bunches of these varmints, but the battle has been raging for eons, with no clear cut winner. Our chucks usually live in very rocky areas within easy distance of good grazing. It would take dynamite to blast them out of their dens.

I once found a coyote suspended upside down in a rock crevice where he had attempted to reach a chuck, and got stuck. He was a week or two dead when I found him.

Our squirrels and chucks start coming out of hibernation as early as late January, but mostly in February, and often when there is still snow on the ground. I've shot a few on Ground Hogs Day. jd
