First 1000 yard competition

So Saturday at camp grayling Michigan I attended my first 1000 yard competition. First off it was a blast and quite a learning experience. All the guys were willing to talk and teach me what was going on.

Got to watch the F class and Palma shooters. Also got to head down to the pits and help run the targets which I thought was pretty cool.

During a relay change a fellow came over and asked me if I could spot/score for him. Of course I said I would do it but explained I knew NOTHING about what to do, which ended up being a piece of cake.

The shooter I spotted for ended up being Bryan Litz who works for Berger bullets and while watching him shoot realized was one heck of a shooter.

So it ended up being a great experience and got to meet some nice people! Can't wait to do it again.

Sounds awsome! I must admit that I enjoy scoring for someone about as much as I like to shoot. I love watching the traces "disappearing" into the target, especially from a good shooter.

Awesome for you! Are you hooked yet?

Got a place to shoot up near BoisBlanc? Again Grayling isnt that far.

Good Shooting, Good new friends and good new experiences....!!

Scoring was a lot of fun. I wouldn't mind doing that anytime!

I definitely want to attend more matches thats for sure and at some point start competing.

Here where i live the farthest I can shoot is 500 yards. But I am looking into what other ranges and events may be in the near area.

No Grayling isn't far from me only about 1 hr 45 minutes.

I really envy those that have a good club nearby that hold regular matches. The closest to me is 90 miles. I do, however, have my own range marked off to 600 yrds, though I shoot most often at 300. It's a big pain to shoot about five rounds, jump on the quad, and drive down to see what ya did. Doing this over 600 yards very often makes for a long range session, plus, you dont get the same real-time feedback to check on your corrections. I'm looking at build a couple of berms with a pit so me and my son can take turns marking shots. That will sure make it more beneficial.

Boisblancboy,
That is awesome I am glad you enjoyed it, why didn't someone offer to let you shoot? or did they, I always have a extra gun if a new guy wants to take a crack at it and encourage it. I got my *** handed to me today by a new shooter at our 1000 yard shoot in Missoula Montana Sat and Sun, and the new shooter was a young lady, I was very happy for her and told her so, Her first name is Canada and if she shows up watch out the girl can shoot :D Go to another match and ask them if you could give it a try, I bet someone will have a gun for you to shoot, of course if you don't like spending money DON'T do it you will be hooked ;)

We just had a man get on the line after 2yrs of watching. He is doing so well he regrets the wasted time! The fast way to learn to swim is the same today as it has always been, Jump in!

I think "equipment shock" or maybe more correctly stated "sticker shock" may be what keeps many from starting sooner than they do, if at all. All ya gotta do is round up the best equipment you can, whether it is setting in your closet or you go purchase it, and get to shooting. Like many others, I've been shooting since I was a kid ( 4 or 5yo), but have only recently got started in competitions. I'm shooting a Savage Precision Carbine in .308 and a Savage Model12 in .223. I've got my son started with a Mossberg MVP, which shoots suprisingly well, almost too well considering it's low price tag, and we are having a blast!

Immike,
You wouldn't be talking about Jim would you?
Wayne.

That was lenny Bagdon, he was hard to get started and content to watch us. We stayed on him to shoot with us since he kept showing up. When a good rifle at the right price became available we ganged up on him. He is doing so well right away that we are watching him closely.

I see, well same story at our range and Jim shot scary well, I pulled two of his targets this weekend, at 1K yards in very switchy winds he drove his 6X47 in the 7" range 10 shot group but 7 shots made 4" the last three went out and that was the way it was on both targets, just a little more tuning and he will have it, I love to see new guys get started and when they do well right away it's even better because there more excited and want more, they will stick around that way.

It is alot of fun! Seems the first step is always the hardest. We are teaching him everything we know and he soaks it up like a sponge. Even how to sneak the new stuff in the house!

Glad you had fun at Grayling. Send me your e-mail address in a pvt message or to my regular e-mail and I will send you a composite list of shoots in Michigan.

Bob L. the first guy you talked too in the camping area.

bob2484 (the at sign) acegroup.cc

P.S. If you come to the June match ask me and I will let you take some shots with my Ftr rifle, I usually finish quick enough to allow another shooter to get some shots in before the relay ends.

Lenny just won his first 600 yrd match against tough competition. WOW. Not bad for a rookie! Good Guys do finish first once in a while. I'm sure he's on cloud #9. It's great to see the big smile of a first time winner.

Sounds like you need one of those wireless video display setups they have now for 1000y shooters. You should look into them for your home range they aren't to bad when it comes to costs. I think they recently had a write up on the daily bulletin page with info. Shooting High Power silhouette I know all about the running back and forth over 1/2 a mile but not to just check paper you have to reset 55+ pound targets on rails! lol At least you can tell what you did when you hit one ;)

Yeah, another fella mentioned the wireless camera at the last match. I think I'll check into it. Thanks
