Fireforming for a Dasher

Hi,

I recently acquired a Dasher and was fireforming some new 6mm Lapua brass. I seated about .020 jammed, 30 grains of Varget, CCIprimers. I didn't neck size the brass just used what came out of the blue box.

Out of 50 rounds 8 failed to fire. The indent on the primer looked normal.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

The firing pin pushed the case ahead enough for it not to fire. Besides the no fire issue this creates headspace problems and poor quality dasher brass.. They ALL get pushed back some...just some more than others. This gives you lots of different case lenghts....lots of runnout. That is why, of the SERIOUS dasher shooters I know, use the false sholder method. I always run my new brass of any calibre through an expander die and then size them to order just to iron out the 25% or so of cases that have dents in the neck from shipping. Using the false sholder method doesn't take any more time for me, and I get perfect dasher cases EVERY TIME. I Only go to up .257 and back down to ..whatever I am chambered for.

What is the neck diameter on your dasher chamber? I have not yet used blue box for any of my .269 necks, but I know I would need to skim the necks to get minimal clearance when I am forced to buy blue box.

I am using a hydrolic form die from hornady and love it. Gives me a shoulder to turn into as well.

Alf, I don't give a flying fart who you think he is or in how high of esteem you hold him in. I don't know the man, he may be the best Dasher man on the planet. That doesn't intimidate me one little bit. he made a "Blanket" statement and that statement is just wrong plain and simple. I know al least 30 people who are pretty damn serious about there Dashers and at least 60% of them don't form there Dasher brass the way he does. Doesn't mean they are right and he is wrong not at all, but it does speak to a blanket statement that says : "If you don't form your brass the way I say to then you are not a serious Dasher shooter" Thats just plain old BS any way you slice it.

You need to re-read the statement that Tod made. He said of the serious dasher shooters that HE knows uses that method, it was not judgmental. Plus even if he did post in a with a strong opinion, the fact that he is ranked #1 should carry weight with people.

I use the turned neck technique (#3 from http://www.6mmbr.com/6improvedform.html) for my brx, but it's got a tight neck, so it's my only alternative. Works great, but it is a PITA to get right.

Uniform blow length is what you should shoot for forming Dasher brass, this won't happen unless you use the false shoulder or where you stop the neck turner.With the new brass my blow length is 1.550 and it will stay with in .002 if you do everything right.Jamming bullets with out the false shoulder or cut shoulder is very inconsistent...... jim

I don`t know Tod, but feel I am a serious Dasher shooter, and I use the false shoulder just as he explains. If I had tried to help the guy this is exactly the advise I would have given.

i just finished 200. lost 5. i size new brass 205m soft cup primers 30.3 varget 90 or 95gr flat base bullets .040 the secret is sizing and flat base bullets

On the flat base bullet thing...with a lot of neck tension, the bullet forms a step at its base that gives quite a bit more resistance to being driven farther into the neck than a BT would.

I had to shorten the chamber length on my new reamers for the new blue box brass that is only 1.555 long and the .012- neck wall thickness.... jim

If my current dasher didn't shoot so dam good while FFing, I would definately like to try this method. Some say it is a little messy, but..well, you should see my reloading bench. :-[

As far as loosing brass...I do loose one or two per 100, but that is just poor brass. They split at the sholder/body junction and don't fully blow. I am assuming that the split happens before they reach the PSI levels needed to blow the casses and the gasses just vent around the outside of the case. They also sound funny and hit about 5" low at 500.

Sorry for opening a can of worms but I did learn a lot about fireforming for the Dasher. Now I have another question that may sound stupid to some of you experienced Dasher shooters so I apologize in advance.

Does it make sense to FL resize after fireforming in the rifles's chamber?

Also what do you use just to get the neck resized. I have a Dasher Redding seating die and bushing FL sizing die but can't find a neck resizing die.
