Fireball's 6 TBR

Hi
Reading about this cartridge got me very much interested in it.

I had a project on, on building a 6BR. In the mean time a found a 6BR very reasonable priced and bought it. I already ordered a stock, action and barrel from my gunsmith for the project as well as a reamer from PTG. Not wanting to cancel to project, I decided on a 6TBR I already do have 6br dies as well.

I took a std 243 case and put it through the 6BR body die, but did find the following! For the case neck to form to .322 I must push the case so far into the die that the shoulder is set back by some distance and the case body is no more that of a 243. If I size the case that the body dimensions stay the same the neck is not .322". There form a severe donut inside the neck with the junction with the shoulder.

Long story, but, I am using PMP brass, locally made, which has a name for being hard. Could this be my problem?? I do have some 200 pieces Lapua brass on order for this project. I hope I put this into understandable English.

Any info, help, will be very much appreciated.

Keep well

Francois

A 322 neck, sure you are not talking about a 272 neck? Length or diameter? Can't get a mental picture from your description.

Sorry, talking length here. The 6 BR case has a neck length of.322"

Yes, the reamer I ordered,6BR, has a .272, no turn, neck.

Hope this help.

I am not sure you can do the 6TBR using a 6BR reamer. Depending on the case taper the 6BR reamer might cause the chamber to be "loose" on the bottom part of the case. I believe you will have to order a specific 6TBR reamer. You would run a few Lapua cases into the 6mmBR body die to get your .322" neck length and then send these cases,or dimensions from the cases) to the reamer provider to make the 6TBR reamer. And yes forming the case in the 6mmBR body die to obtain the .322" neck length does set the shoulder back a tad and gives a slight ripple near the should junction but this will form out nicely once fired.

Since I already have 6mmBR and .243 dies, I envisioned using the 6mmBR body die to set the shoulder back if I ever needed to on fired cases. And I would use the .243 body die to resize the bottom of the case if need be.

So the only tooling one would need, assuming they already have 6mmBR and .243 dies) would be a 6TBR specific reamer.

I am with you on the dies, I do have 243 dies as well.

I sorted the neck junction out today, just put a 6mm expander ball through the inside of the neck, and again through the 6BR body die, and it is looking good. I do think one will have to turn the necks to get rid of the little excess brass near the neck/shoulder junction.

I send the 6Br reamer off to my gunsmith today, will let you know how the project is going.

Keep well

Sorry, one more thing. If the 6BR reamer isn't working, do you think Mr Kiff of PTG will have on like that??

Thanks

Francois

Dave Kiff will work with you on one. He is a great guy. I can also talk to him if you would like? I had always planned on him making the reamer for me but I got side-tracked from this project because of my interest in the 20 calibers.

Send Dave an e-mail just now with your photo of the cases and everything. Ask him if it would be possible to use the 6BR reamer on the 6TBR. Awaiting his reply.

You could talk to him, please. I want to shoot 75-87 gr V-max bullets with no turn necks. He suggested .073 free bore with a .272 neck on the 6BR reamer, and I couldn't see why there would be other specks on this one.

I do have a 1-10 twist barrel on order, would you think this is OK or must I rather go with a 1-12 twist?? What kind of vel. can one expect from such a setup that I wants??

Very much interested in this cartridge.

Thanks for your time

Keep well

Francois

Freebore and neck sound good for the bullets you want to use. 1-10" twist also sounds good.

For my own use I was going to have less freebore and shoot the Nosler 70 gr. BTs through a 1-12 twist. I was going to use the cartidge for prairie dogs, not competition.

Let me know what Dave says in his email about using the 6mmBR reamer. It might work, he is really good with dimensions and should know. If he doesn't answer your email I can give him a call as I assume it is long distance for you? Are you in France?

Fireball

Dave hasn't answered as yet, but I am sure he will. I will let you know as soon as I do have an answer.
What vel. can I expect??

No, I am not in France, but in Namibia. Just to the NW of South Africa. Used to be South West Africa. My forefathers came from France way back in 1820.

Keep well.

Dave said NO GO. I must have a 6TBR reamer. I think this is the end of my 6TBR project. I don't have another U$ 146.00 for a reamer, just received the 6BR reamer. Maybe one day, I will start all over again. I will try to convince my gunsmith to go half with me on this but I don't know.

Keep well, was nice talking with you, will look you up if this go ahead.

Francois

Francois, I thought that to be the case. Too bad. The 6TBR idea will be around for if you do want to eventually try it one day. If I do one I will post my results here. Take care and good shooting to you.

Fireball

Talked to my g/smith. We are going to take the risk and cut the chamber with the BR reamer.

The result will be a chamber that is straight for about 10-12 mm and then began to taper. If there is any problems, with extraction or whatever, we simply cut it back to BR specs.

Will let you know how this turns out.

Keep well

I`ve just received a 1:12 twist Krieger barrel and originally planned a 6BR, then a 6BR Impr, then considered a 6TBR, but still have not made up my mind. Incidentally I also live in Namibia,Whk). Give me a call so we can compare notes.
Cheers
