Finnished barrel length

I for got how much you loose from barrel length from a blank length to the finished length? Thank You RW

Need more info. There's no rule for every cartridge or even every powder in the same cartridge.
Edit...as I just reread your post. If you mean strictly where can it be cut, different barrel makers have different requirements. You should ask the barrel maker.

Normally it is 1" off the muzzle, that is to insure there is true inside bore dimensions after the manufacturer hand laps the barrel.
McGowen ships with this portion already cut off, ready to crown.

Thank You I was hoping to get 24'' and it measures 25''and it is a brux barrel in proposed 6.5-06ai or 6.5x55ai

Dusty-----would you please comment on how to "really do it right".

I asked two different makers of premium barrels:
One said remove at least 1" from each end.
The other said remove at least 1" from the muzzle end------the reamer will clean up the breech end.

Would be interesting to find out what others consider to be minimum removal requirements.

If you cut 1” off the muzzle then crown it then 24” is no longer there. Itll be fine if thats what you do

I've always liked to see makers put a hacksaw or other mark on the barrel, where THEY want it cut..or behind. The guy doing the lapping is who determines how much needs to be cut off, as well as the person who hopefully air gages it before it gets shipped out. That spot can be a little different even within the same make of barrel. I think a lot of it depends upon the length of the lap used. I think a longer lap is best. JMHO. I've lapped a few barrels with lead laps but I don't call myself anywhere near an expert on the subject. Still, the barrel will bell out on the ends, where the lap is reversed and charged with lapping compound. I don't think there is a one size fits all amount, except to say that most makers will state enough to be "safe". Some makers say 2", such as ABC. Broughton use to say about 3" and several around 1 inch. Still others, do as previously mention and mark the barrel with a shallow hack or bandsaw mark. This method leaves the least doubt.

I am much newer at this than most an I will always be an amateur, but given you just have to face the chamber end and cut 3/4' -1" off the muzzle end, 24" from a 25" blank should be too hard.
