Finished Gun Barrel Length Question

How do you determine the perfect finished length of a gun barrel using a match blank? Does it depend on the calibre, barrel contour, twist rate, powder, bullet weight or a combination of all. What is the benchmark from where you start?

i think wht the purpose the gun is intended for is the driving factor, 1000yds- than somewhere around 30", brush gun than 20" , What ever your target is, than do the math, Do you need 1500ft lbs of energy at 500 yds, than how much barrel do you need to get there. If u need to stay supersonic out to 1100yds, how much barrel do u need.

i also think the intended use drives the rest of the train, caliber, twist, contour, powder, and bullet type and weight.

What is perfect length for 30br 1-18 twist heavy contour?
What is perfect length for 222 rem mag 1-14 twist heavy contour?
What is perfect lenght for win 308 332 nk 1-10 twist heavy contour 5r rifling?
All meant to shoot 100 yds.

Per the other posts it's a number arrived at after careful consideration of the intended use for the rifle being fitted. Add to that the gunsmith's determination of the condition of the bore at the muzzle end; a given blank may not be suitable for finishing to a desired length if somthing's not right inside.

I had a new Palma barrel fitted last year that ended up @ 29" instead of the 30" I'd expected. Gunsmith made the call, I said fine & got on with my life. My choice of 'smiths went by reputation after all (he's an NRA Long Range National Champion) & expected he'd do right by me.

The rifle shoots just fine thanks, I had my best Palma season ever this year.

There is no 'perfect lenght' but you can get close if you know what you want AND what you're doing.

Slug the barrel, and find a tight area close to where you want the length to be, like 28-32" for a LR rifle. Don't want the muzzle to be looser than the rest of the tube.
