What RPM?

RPM 340--HSS rounded the nose slightly--no chatter down to .850
Now I have to move the steady and do the muzzle end.

Now you know you can do it I wouldn't waste any more time on a shot out barrel. Grab a good barrel and make your time count. I've done a few and it is a slow process especially without ideal equipment. They did shoot well though.

I think where it is especially nice to know you can do it is if you are doing a custom profile. I did one that was octagon to the end of the stock then a straight taper to muzzle. Balanced perfectly weight wise and looked great. Would have been very pricey to have hired someone to do it.

Done a few, even one on a milling machine to see what would happen...took even longer, but looks cool. But there is a reason I almost always buy contoured blanks now.

Hey Hal, it's cut with an end mill in a milling machine, so you get that finish because it's a rotary tool.

I contour at 1600. You want to use a 1/64 radius tool and angle the nose into the cut.

If you want some real fun, try recontouring a barrel that is already fluted! The "fun" you will have will be endless. Been there and done that, but only once!

Depends on weather you are wearing flip-flops or not , seems like a sensible response

I don't see any way that I would do it again. I do have prints for a following rest with three air cylinders that works great.
