I have a thought again following up on the hole being concentric to the outside diameter maybe having less interference in these vibrations or waves.. I would assume having a barrel cryogenically treated would leave a more even steel crystal structure..This would in my opinion have a positive effect on waves and or vibrations in the steel's structure and leading to less destructive interference...

Are there any actual facts known about barrel vibration/harmonics or is it all theory?

It is all supposition - it does not meet the level of theory. It would be simple and in inexpensive for Chris Long to prove it, but so far he has shown no interest in doing it.

That is exactly how I see most all your input.....

Chris Long's work and experience to wave theory, surpass all input I've seen you set forth, predominately.
Chris offers his detailed theory to the world to see. You offer a No answer to the theory with no detail.
And you have the gall to say "it would be simple and in inexpensive for Chris Long to prove it, but so far he has shown no interest in doing it". If you know it would be so simple, why haven't you done it and shown proof of the contrary ?
Your very vague input yields very poor opposition... unless Catshooter says NO is warranting proof and opposition.

Donovan... this topic is way over your head.

But Chris says at the end of his paper...

"I am planning to instrument a barrel with both strain gauges and acoustic sensors (microphones) in order to get hard confirmation of the above theories. I will update this document as that information becomes available. Any comments, questions, or suggestions can be directed to me at chris@the-long-family.com ."

So he did no testing in the process of developing his supposition, and in all these years, he has not done any follow up.

... and he does not answer my emails to him.

Says a lot.

And if you don't understand what it says, then you are welcome to scream into the wind.

CatShooter, the more you post on this thread, the more discredited you appear. My suggestion to you is to put up some actual evidence as Donovan has asked, since you have stated that it's apparently very simple and you seem very invested in being right.

Though you are right about one thing - the fact that he does not answer your emails *does* say a lot. Just not what you are insinuating, if the quality of your emails matches the quality of your posts in this topic. ::)

Elastic solid... that's what a steel rifle barrel is. This essay describes how they can be made to vibrate, and how they behave when they do so.

I submit that our barrels are excited by all kinds of energy input during a firing cycle and that they react accordingly. It's not just the bullet's passage down the bore.

If we expect to achieve maximum, repeatable accuracy in their use we need to pay attention to how the vibrations present affect their performance.

I'd love to have Chris Long's take on this too, but as I don't know him I'll leave it to CatShooter to maybe bring it to his attention.
