findin a load for a .243 win.that will give me 1600 fps,any one with a recepy? got 55 grainers

[QUOtrailblazer atzen, post: 36884935, member: 998469"]I would be VERY careful with loads way below the normal for a given cartridge!
In some conditions, a short load can explode rather than simply burn fast and cause rifle, and shooter, damage.

Best to do some research on this subject. Meanwhile, use H1000 as it is way easier on the 243 WIN barrel than other standard powders.[/QUOTE]
Imr trailboss is a proven safe powder for reduced loads for many cartridges including the 243win.

I agree with what you are saying. I would not recommend it if I didn't try it.

H4895 is also good for reduced loads in any cartridge as Long as the case is at least 60% full of it.

Hodgdon specifies the H4895 can be loaded down to 60% of a maximum load in any cartridge it is listed with.
60% of a max load is probably less than 60% of case capacity.

Yes it does I have some of there data for just that. I cant remember if its 60 % or not but I do have a few reduced loads with h4895.

+++++++++ What he said:eek:

Yes my mistake. It is 60% of max recommended charge weight. Thanks for the correction.

I agree that 2400 is a viable choice. I have used it for reduced loads in several calibers. It meters and drops through a Dillon powder measure fairly reliably in .270 and larger, although you might encounter occasional bridging in a .243, not a concern if you are single stage loading. There is a lot of cast bullet data for 2400 to give you a starting point, of course jackets will give you more pressure than cast.

The main concern with light loads of fast burning powder is that you might accidentally drop two charges of powder in a case and it would fit in, and you might overlook it. It is easy to double stroke a powder charge on a progressive press and if it overflows, you just clean up the mess. If you are single stage loading, you need to have your charged cases in a block and carefully visually inspect every powder charge before seating your bullets.

Reduced or light loads are great for kids to practice with a rifle they will use for hunting. Low recoil and not much barrel heat. They can fire 40 or 50 rounds of slow fire target practice at pop cans in the hot summertime and not overheat the barrel. I think it is a more appropriate way of celebrating the 4th of July than burning communist chinese fireworks.

Ideally you might find a reduced load that will give you a 100yd zero in a rifle that is already sighted in at 200yd. That way the kids can have their fun and their practice, and you will not have to resight the trusty rifle.

One last thought on light loads with fast burning powder. If you are working up a load to get that 100yd zero, or working up to enough pressure to give a nice clean burn of the powder, you might consider using Winchester primers. Their primer cups are softer than CCI, and pressure signs are easier to read and become apparent sooner. I use a magnifying glass to examine primers for signs of flattening. There may be only one grain difference between a mild load and a flattened primer. Of course you can avoid these necessities for caution by just going with a moderate dose of H4895 or Trailboss, with more recoil more heat more expense and more safety. Have fun and be safe.
