Finally Getting Out of Commifornia

Alrighty everyone! I’m finally moving to Texas! Leaving California is something I’m very excited about.

Can anyone help me understand the legalities and processes for handling my guns during the move (given that they’re registered in Cali) and getting Texas residency (so that I can legally purchase guns in Texas).

I would call Texas department of public safety and ask them how to proceed. You want to make sure it’s done correctly. I’m sure they can give you guidance.
 
Ok I retired from San Antonio PD two years ago... Drive to Texas with your weapons.... Done....... Well never mention, "In California we did "this".. You will be shuned and rightfully so.. If you see a Rudy's BBQ you will be required to eat there and you want "moist" brisket. That means fatty brisket... Never put sauce on the first bite you must first enjoy the flavor of the meat. Then add sauce to your liking.. I hope this helps... Oh don't leave damn guns in your vehicle....

Edit.. Where you moving to in Tejas...? It is a little on the large size.. Moving to Montana half my drive was getting out of Texas.. Oh and Tejas is exceptable...

Exactly this.... Congratulations , also an ex_leo from Texas , born and raised.... Welcome to a free state.... I didn't see were your moving to but I am around the Austin area....
 
I moved to Texas when I got stationed at fort hood. I was leaving fort leonardwood, Missouri.

You pack up your guns and you drive to Texas. Get a Texas drivers license after you establish residency. Don’t ever tell anyone in Texas you’re from California. Just tell them you’re from the town you reside in.

If you’re moving to Austin, then you can tell the soyboy hipsters about your California escapades. You can talk about it over you pumpkin spice latte along with who your grinder date is for the night on 6th street. ;):D

You’ll love Texas. I know I did. Congrats on the big move! Seriously, the gun laws are chill. Just get a drivers license and you can buy whatever you want.

Thanks folks! It’s been a while since I was active on this forum (thanks California), so I forgot how helpful you folks are!

I’ll be in the Dallas area, in case any of you fancy a shooting buddy who has an engineer’s attention to detail when reloading or fixing things.

I really appreciate the help from gunsmiths, civilians, LEOs, and military alike in understanding where to go next.

Most people who live in the San Joaquin Valley of California will fit right in with those in Texas (excluding Austin). Oil, ag, construction, hunting, fishing, racing. Its most of the rest that make California what it is unfortunately. Remember Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Red Simpson, the Bakersfield Sound and plenty more came from Bakersfield. Lots of country boys and girls still here. Barry.
 
Off topic but you guys raised it...

I am rather partial to brisket. Or what we call brisket down here (Australia). How do you guys do your brisket (in Texas)? I have been doing it is a slow cooker but am always open to alternatives!

I spent a bit of time in California a few years ago. Does that make me "damaged goods"?
