Finally found a 6XC load

Finally found a load for my 6XC with good accuracy and decent velocity extreme spreads. I never had trouble getting my rifle (bartlein 1:7.5) to shoot well. I even found some loads with low extreme spreads. I could never get the accuracy and the low velocity variations at the same time. I had been using norma brass and just about every LRP I could get my hands on. Recently purchased Peterson SRP brass as one last shot. 108 berger, 36gr Varget, F205M, .010 off the lands, 3010fps got me .41" average group size with three 5 shot groups. Shooter technique error screwed up one group but I still counted it. The extreme spread is 24-29 with SD of 9-11. My previous loads that shot well had extreme spreads of over 60fps and would vertical terrible at long range. Hope this helps someone else.

I have tried everything with the norma brass. Seating depth tests +.01, 0, -.01, -.03, -.06, -.09, -.12 with several bullets, primers, and powder combinations. I even annealed cases. My particular barrel only had decent velocity spreads with Varget and IMR8208 but would not shoot good enough with either. For some reason the Peterson SRP brass with F205M primers shot good while maintaining a reasonable velocity variation. I really like the Peterson brass. Primer seating pressure is firm but not so much you can't feel the primer bottoming out. The neck tension was very consistent. All bullets seated with the same smooth feel.

With all due respect, I think that Varget is too fast for this cartridge and the bullets you choose to use. Put the cap back on that bottle and let's look at some other solutions.;)

I recently (early 2019) bought all new components for the 6XC testing I was doing for an overseas competition. New Peterson brass, new 115 DTAC bullets (non-coated) and Berger 105 VLD Hybrid. Since I was starting with all new components I thought it would be wise to see what the rest of the world was using for powder. Here is what this website suggested in a detailed thread:

http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/6xc-load-data-imr4166-n550-rl-23-h4350.3971729/

But I personally don't use 4350 in any flavor so the search was on for powder which filled the case. I needed two loads:

Kick the tires and light the fires load:eek:

Modest pressure and excellent upper node performance:rolleyes:

For the faster load, I didn't care about barrel life as this was a run and gun competition, no points for second place.:D I wound up using a fairly stout load of VVN-150 under the 105s. Consistent and high performance.

For the moderate load I used the 115 DTAC (rebated) over Re-23. Lower pressure, lower temperature and excellent for a 1,000 yard load.

Test powders which fill your case better since low case fill leads to inconsistencies. A powder with a lower flame temp will yield lower pressure and lower velocities. Look for the accuracy node by shooting a 300 yard ladder. Refine the load then shoot groups.

Enjoy the process!:D

The whole reason I started this thread is to inform everyone that sometimes we have to go outside the "normal" powders to get the results we want. Believe me I tried all the normal powders and then some. This barrel was very frustrating for me. Just wanted to help others. Incidentally, shot this load at 775 yards this weekend and it held very good vertical.
