FINALLY Best powder for my 308

FINALLY Best powder for my 308
After trying numerous powders I have finally landed on what I think will be my best powder for 165,168 grain bullets. Numerous powders have given much different impact points using TTSX, Ballistic Tips, Accubonds & A-MAXs. I have zeroed in on 3031 and 4320 so far but today get much better results with 4064. The 4064 brought the BTs and ABs into a quarter size together and the TTSX close but quarter size. Even the elusive ELD-X slugs came together the best so far with 4064. The numbers in inches on the photos mean nothing. That is impact over the aiming point. My gun is Remington M700VSF 308 12" twist. The 130 grain TTSX with 3031 last week did very well.

NOTICE "1 flyer" on each group except for best group. ???? Tell me what causes that???

Best group is 3 Hunting BTs & ABs

IMR-4895 works good, too. Spendy, but my favorite is Vihtavouri-135. 4064 is a great powder for the 308, and it's usually around when Varget is a ghost. I really like your dog, by the way. I have 2 longhairs. Great breed.

Win. 748, with 155's, use to use 4064 with no problems but the 748 performs well and METERS like a dream! (loaded for factory gun)

I've never understood why people love 4064 so much. Varget, N135, H4895 and RL-15 work so much better for me.

They both work good for me but I could not find Varget and was able to find 4064 most of the time so I just use it.
From what I understand they both have almost the exact burn rate. You can use the load data from each other if you have to. I just heard that Varget is more temp. friendly- that was the main difference unless someone else knows something else I don't.... please enlighten me.

My hands-down favorite for 150s is CFE223 (MR2000). It is good with 165s, too, but for them I prefer Re15 and Varget. 4064 and 4895 are also good, but not as good as the others in my rifles. It is hard to find a bad powder for the .308.

Tried Alliant 2000-MR with 190g Nosler CC bullets yesterday. Was using their load data off Noslers website. Worked up to 45.6g in LC match brass and CCI 200 primers. If you saw the 200 yard group you'd think I was lying. Measured .676" ..... I was very impressed.

Primer selection with every powder is KEY. In my current rifle I am using CCI200 with very good results paired with 42.5gr IMR 4064 and 168gr TMK. But I urge you to try several different primers to see how they pair up. Simple test is to choose a charge and shoot a string of 5-10 rounds of each primer to give you some SD/ES numbers to compare. Be Sure to keep the same COAL that you are using now.
