Well, I got the Ranger 22 back from Christensen Arms for the second time. Communication with them was excellent. I ran 90 rounds through it and the rifle is working fine - so far. We’ll see how long that lasts. Although I am happy that it is working now, several things need to be considered about C.A. and their products. Anyone and everyone can produce an occasional product that is substandard. How well they take care of problems is the key.
The first time I returned it the last fired casing would fall back into the magazine. They had the rifle 6 weeks (not including shipping). This is their report on the repair:
Our top gunsmiths have performed a full detailed inspection, cleaned, and carefully completed the following services on your firearm:
Tuned Trigger Ejector Arm, Installed New Extractor
When I fired it, the problem was worse. Now in addition to the last casing falling back into the magazine, several empties would fail to eject throughout a full magazine load. I sent it back a second time. They had it two days. Their report on the second repair is:
Our top gunsmiths have performed a full detailed inspection, cleaned, and carefully completed the following services on your firearm:
Tuned Bolt Stop Spring, Installed New Bolt Head
Bolt face had been pinged causing distortion on the face and housing slot of the the strong side extractor. New bolt face installed and strong side extractor modified for deeper extraction. Spring modified for stronger hold on extractors. Test fired for effect and found no issues.
They even sent me a video of them test firing it, but they only loaded two rounds.
I read many articles and saw videos on their extraction/ejection problems so it isn’t just me. They claimed to have the issue corrected so I took a chance and bought one in July. This model has been in production over a year and a half and they are still having issues. Looking at what they did in their second report, why wasn’t that done the first time around? How did this piece even get past quality control initially? Other than the rifle not functioning, I really liked it, which is why I broke my rule of returning something for a warranty problem only once. I must admit that my enthusiasm on this piece has significantly diminished.
This will be my final report on the Ranger, if I continue to have problems with it in the near future it will be euthanized.
