My 243. I'm stuck at 1/2 moa. I've tried many different things except powder. Been using H414 w/mag primer. Doesn't fill case much. 80 sierra b/t blitz and 87 v-max. 1-10 twist and anything heavier shoots lousy. Still have lots of 414 but will to try 1 pound of something. Do you think filling the case helps?
I was not trying to imply a varmint rifle becomes useless when you start getting bore wear. I had a Rem 700 BDL 6mm Rem caliber heavy barrel. It had about 7000 shots in the original barrel and about 7000 shots on a Douglas SS barrel. Nelson Berger put the Douglas barrel on it. Now it’s a 6BR Kreiger barrel (by Kelby) with 3000 shots. It was glass bedded nothing else for 35 years. With the factory barrel or Douglas I don’t remember groups much smaller than 1 “. After about 7000 shots down the Rem and Douglas barrel it still would shoot groups about 1”.
On the Douglas barrel no visible rifling for the first 2” and severe loss of rifling out to about 6”. It still killed hundreds of GH. When I look down the barrel of present Krieger 6BR by eye after 3000 shots I cannot see any hint of bore damage even though there has to be some. I’m glad I switched to 6BR. Almost every load is under .400 even with 3000 shots.
Attached pictures of a sectioned Douglas 6MM Rem barrel after about 7000 shots. Two pictures above the case mouth the other two 2” down the bore.
