filling a inlet Gap on McMillian stock

I have a M40A4 stock.it was inlet for a Remington SPS DM.I devcon the action and added wyatts DBM.
I want to fill in the dove tail slot on the side. What would you sugest?I am thinking Marine TEX.

I would drill small holes into the surrounding material to ensure that your epoxy piece doesn't pop out later. Scuff it up real good and remove any coating/paint in the area. Marine tex or something the like and then repaint after blending the job into the surrounding area.

Step 1. Remove DBM and wax thoroughly. Reinstall.

Step 2. Prep dovetail by sanding/drilling to assure adhesion.

Step 3. Lay gun on side and mix a batch of devcon 10110. Tape some wax paper to bottom of stock so it covers lower dovetail up to rounded portion. Pour/shove in enough mixed devcon to fill dovetail to top of side of stock. Wait 24 hours.

Step 4. Switch sides and repeat.

Step 5. Sand smooth with stock, prime , and paint.

Remember, anything not waxed and or otherwise protected will now be permanently epoxied in place.

You can also use bondo. Its very quick, so be prepared. I have done it both ways, still comes out invisible.

I would offer two additional considerations.
To eliminate the possibility of the patch becoming dislodged you need, IMO, to do more than rough up surfaces and drill holes. Consider placing some of the patch material and a couple of roughed up metal pins (even a threaded screw shank) in the holes before laying down your patch material. Let that dry first. It'll strengthen the patch and reduce the chances of it pulling out of the stock.
Fill and smooth the surfaces that you fill and wait for it to dry completely but keep in mind that, for a finished surface, you'll be needing to float the surface with a fine finish coat before finish sanding. Patch material shrinks. It's a fact of life.
Nice looking rig ...............

West Marine makes a Polyester Fiber filler in several consistencies ie: 403, and 404.

They also sell fiberglass cloth, and fiberglass resin.

You can order fiberglass color pigments.

You can use paste wax and wax paper as your release agents.

The original McMillian fiberglass stock was made in a mold that was coated with release agent then had a coat or two of gel coat applied. then fiberglass cloth was hand laid or fiber was added with a chopper gun. The stock was allowed to dry/harden then filled with poyester/glass filler in the action area and with Styrofoam and or bondo in other areas. Then the stock was rough inlet on a CNC vertical mill.

I would recommend against using anything but fiberglass resin and polyester filler with the matching pigments.

You can get a stock repair kit directly from Mcmillan that will have everything you need to fill in the slots. Call them and let them know what stock you have and what you are trying to do and they will make sure you get the right kit.
