Fiery muzzle blast

Best guess is the barrel length. However you did not mention the charge, primer or bullet weight. Each can definitely affect burning rate. I usually see more flash with moderate to heavy charges of slower powders. But I think some powders, just like some people, burn a tad brighter than others.
Any other signs of pressure or powder deterioration?

Thanks for the replies. I'm nearly out of IMR4895, so tried 28.0/A2495, 0.6 less than the IMR. The report was clearly duller. The 2495 smells somewhat like Vicks Vaporub, though not super strong. Is it deteriorating? There was no rusty dust. N

Might be. A pungent smell is a bad sign. I wouldn't call Vicks mild at all.

A max charge of H110 from a 460 S&W x frame (with a brake) will clear a bench on either side of you at your local range : 0 Now that is a fireball! It’s almost as impressive from a 450 bushmaster all the way down to the 357.

My carbine length (18") 35 Whelen spits a wicked fireball. I can't remember what powder I was shooting though. Either TAC, R15 or Varget.

My 18" bushmaster with a pretty stout load of lil' gun I haven't noticed a fireball.

I always figured it's a powder and barrel length thing. Powder not fully burning and exiting the barrel.
