FFL ???

When reading posts in the forum, the "for sale" forum, I always see that sellers want to send their rifle to an FFL. Why ? I went to the UPS center today to ship some packages and talked to a supervisor about this. He stated that a private individual may send a long gun through UPS to another individual, but not handguns. Sooo ??????? Why the FFL ?

i believe it is federal law (or at least state law) that any firearm that is sold across state lines that it has to go to a FFL...one other thing which i dont know if it matters to anyone. but it does take the responsiblity off of the seller knowing that he is selling his firearm to someone that is not a felon.

You will open up a wide discussion on legalities this/that within an open gun forum.

Federal laws, and state laws are just that.

Certain "practices" and "policies" are a whole different matter.

My advice would be to go to the ATF's site, read up there and then look up your local laws.

Just play it safe, and do things the right way.

You can buy or sell to private parties within your own state without an FFL. Across state lines requires the receiver to be a licensed dealer. This applies only to long guns. Revolvers and pistol rules are very strict and require FFL both ways and special shipping rules. You need to read the BATF site.

It's a Federal Law that requires a Firearm (long arm) to be tranfered across State lines to be handled by a FFL Dealer, outlined here in the BATFE FAQ in PDF:

http://www.atf.gov/publications/download/p/atf-p-5300-4.pdf

This subject has been covered in the Forums and the Forum Boss even wrote an outstanding Article in the Daily Bulletin and included all the need to knows for us are not FFL Dealers that sell over/through the internet.

Not entirely accurate. The state of CA. requires all gun transactions conducted within its boundaries to be handled through an FFL. Individual to individual included. Other states might have adopted this idiotic law by now?
