FFL in NYS

I have a friend locally here in New York that is about to give up his Dealers Licenses (Federal and State) and stick to gunsmithing only, which he is also licensed for. For the small time, out of your home FFL of days gone buy, in most cases you don't even save much if anything against buying on the internet from the Big Boys. The retail prices of many things that Buds sells are at Straight Wholesale so a small shop has to work on convenience, friendly advise and Inside Discounts to compete. Back in the Day, I bought many sporting good items like Mitchel Reels when they were on sale at E.J. Korvetts because I couldn't buy them wholesale that cheap. Then when they were not on sale at Korvetts I could sell them at their regular prices and make a few dollars.

I owned an actual "Brick and Mortar" gun shop for 16 years of the 36 years I held an FFL. During that time I had another full time profession and income, so the profit from the shop, was not that important to me. It was more of a hobby and I staffed the store with off duty police officers moonlighting on the side. Real world if you want to run a firearms business beyond a hobby or just to save money for your own purchases than this is the cost of doing this kind business today. I surrendered my FFL as the hassle wasn't worth it for what I was doing with the advantages of having it. I had both a Manufacturer's License and a Class III license also, talk about hassle. The alternative is a move to a different state or pick a different career. Unfortunately in New York State, that is the reality and even in other states, the ATF is much different than they were 36 years ago.

You’ve made some Good points I never even thought of. After reading everyone’s comments I’m not going to bother with it for what I wanted to do.
