Feeding 223

DLT

I have a 223 barrel on the way. Usually I single feed but like to have the option to feed from a magazine or a bdl type. The barrel will either go on an origin action or a savage action. Planning on running 75-90 gr pills, what are some options that’s a sure fire no trouble plan ?

I'm not positive but isn't the Origin a Rem 700 clone type action so your possibilities for bottom metal and COAL should be nearly endless, within reason of course. I've used numerous HS Prec detachable mag systems with 223 size cartridges and they feed/work slick as hell even my 223 Ack Imp feeds great through them. If you're wanting to stay with factory Rem type BDL bottom metal and you're looking for one I have a few that are like new sitting on the shelf.

I don't do Savages so can't help you there.

And yes it’s a 700 clone, Hold that thought on the 223 bottom metal. Will the hs detachable mag system bolt up to an bdl cut stock ?

Id look at the 73gr eldm. Good bc. I have a factory savage 12fv. It has a internal mag set up. I can seat the bullet to the lands and still fit in mag. It makes the coal long enough that they wont fit in a mtm 223 ammo case. Have to use a 308 ammo case. Makes more room for powder.

Yes it will. My 223 Ack Imp started life as a Rem 700 LTR 223 before I had it rebarreled/chambered in 223AI and the HS Prec det. mag setup bolted straight in.

My 20-222 also on a Rem 700 that one has a factory Rem walnut stock. I used the same exact HS Prec det. mag system on that rifle and it too was a straight bolt in replacement to the factory BDL hinged floor plate.

Those two are both five round mags and unless you're looking for it you don't really even notice they aren't factory BDL setups.

I use the mtm boxes for my 223AI and mine measure 2.630 coal. They fit in the small mtm boxes. My heaviest bullets are the 88ELD. Can’t speak for 90-95 grain bullets though. This rifle has a 0.230 free bore. I seat the bullets past the donut area in the brass.

Have a 110 Savage .223 action that I dropped into an MDT Field Stock and added a Shilen 26” SS bull barrel in 7 twist for a fun range rifle. VERY accurate out to 500 yards with factory ammo. Rapidly becoming a favorite.

Get the magazine. And I make a single shot feed mag for 223 with long bullets.

I shoot the 85.5-gr Berger Hybrid in my .223 (26" Criterion .223 Match barrel) and feed from AICS-style magazines on bolt guns. I have one of the older MDT polymer mags that accepts up to 2.50" OAL; I leave ~0.020" clearance to avoid jams, so I seat to about 2.480" OAL. MDT has since updated that polymer mag and the new version won’t accept that length. I think you can still run this OAL if you buy the metal MDT AICS mag with the polymer insert: https://mdttac.com/us/223-mdt-metal-aics-magazine

I seat the bullets a bit past the neck/shoulder junction — so if you’re paranoid about donuts, this setup might not be for you. I run the load around 2,750 fps and it’s very accurate (probably my favorite load). It’s still supersonic at 1,000 yds — just barely. I also run the same bullet seated about .060" longer in my .223 F/TR rifle with excellent results; shot 598-36X last weekend at 600 yds. I have a very positive opinion of the 85.5 Berger — it’s probably my favorite .22-cal bullet.

I’ve also tried the 80 SMK — those fit well in AICS mags while staying just above the neck/shoulder junction. I ran the 75 and 80 Hornady ELDs from a magazine and they fed fine, but they didn’t shoot as well for me. I never got good results with the 88 ELD; you’ll have to seat those very deep to make them fit in the mag.
