Feed problems with 22-250 reloads?

Hey all! To be clear this isn't a magazine feed problem, its a single feed problem! With factory loads, with crimped bullet, they will feed in my Savage Model 12 VLP 22-250 no problem. With my reloads, they seem to hang up on the neck of the cartridge. I chamfer the inside and outside of the necks with a Lee chamfer tool. Is the problem with something I am doing, or not doing for that matter, or with the configuration of the rifle itself? Should I try a more aggressive chamfer tool to possibly cure this problem or, should I just get a single shot follower and forget about it? I don't want to crimp bullets, just doesn't seem right. Thats just my opinion on bullet crimping! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Mike

Can you insert a fired case into the chamber without problems ??
Kinda doubt the follower is the problem......
Is it catching on the very end of the neck ??

Yes Preacher, it is catching on the very end of the neck! I can insert the cartridge into the chamber by hand and then close the bolt but, that gets old after a while! I would just like to drop it in the port and shove the bolt closed. Am I asking for too much?

Mike

Hummmmmm...Try a single shot adapter and see if that helps..
Can't quite figure out how the follower will work with the factory loads but not with the reloads..
Do the edges of the case neck seem different than the factorys one's ??

Oh yeah! With the factory Feds I was shooting they had crimped case necks where my reloads do not! The crimp in the case neck allowed the factory ones to just slide into the chamber nice whereas the sharp edge on the non-crimped cartridges would catch! That why I was thinkin a chamfer tool with a little more angle to it might help!

To be clearer, there is a bit of a feed ramp in the Savage action and on the edge of that is where my case necks are hanging up! With the bullet crimp on factory loads they don't hang up but, with no crimp on my reloads this is where they hang up!

Its a problem with 22 cal and smaller cart in the savage model12,it was a design problem, savage would not fix the problem saying it feeds 55 gr factory ok,I had the 223 1-7,told me it was my problem.. I bought the single shot follower but still had problems with seirra HP,then I had to take it to a gunsmith and have them champer the barrel shank as per AR-15 type 100 degrees rad &.500 outside dia.after that at feeds ok..I was banned from :savageshooter .com for my post "Disappointed in savage"2/27/10 up-dated: when I made forum members aware of the problem, but reading others posts its a big problem..I do really like the gun~Danny

Don't get me wrong, I love the way this gun shoots but, I was wondering if there was a better way to load the gun other than pushing the bullet into the chamber with my fingers? Believe this Danny when I say that I don't take any comfort in learning that I am not alone with this problem! I figured maybe a single shot follower from SSS would take care of the problem but, from what you say it won't. I guess I'll have to deal with it until I shoot the barrel out and put a new barrel on the rig. I wonder if any of the barrel manufacturers address this problem with their pre-theaded and chambered barrels they sell for the Savage rifles?

The follower did help some,I was able to get 80gr amaxs to feed after the SSS follower install, but it still wouldn,t allow the seirras (80 gr match)to feed with the HP bullets...the champering of the barrel shank is not a big deal either, find the link on "savage shooter" cost was 35.00 follower +75.00 champer & reinstall barrel/headspace..It is well worth it,... for 35.00 order the follower, with the larger opening of the 22-250 case,it may be enough, because mine (223) just missed the chamber opening,to feed...Danny
