Fee to ship FFL

"My local Gun shop wants $100 to ship a rem 700 action to a smith. And $100 to receive it when it's done. Is that nuts?"

Sounds like the shop owner is a practicing proctologist.

They don't want to be bothered.

Some don't want the liability, or want to make sure the transaction is 100% legit. The safest way to do this is go from FFL to FFL. There is a lot of scamming going on these days.

I have shipped many actions and rifles (NOT Pistols). If the part has a serial number on it, it must be shipped to a FFL with the receiving FFL's credentials inside the box, and yours too.

If the item is insured both ways, then some of the prices I have seen earlier in this thread is reasonable. It would help if your FFL gave you detailed information about the charges.

Shipping within a State is handled a different way. Laws do vary from State to State.

To be on the safe side, and protect your rifle, first pack it well, insure it both ways, and use an experienced FFL to handle your transaction. This is one thing I noticed that wasn't mentioned. YOU want your Customized rifle to be in good hands and insured.

I would also ship it expedited. I have shipped many using the USPS 2 Day Priority Delivery option. That's the safest way to ship a rifle. Before someone says the USPS can't ship a rifle, go to their site, read the rules, and also talk to your local PO personnel. I always make sure i am in compliance when shipping a rifle.

Again, Pistols have a different set of rules.

I have had 2 similar experiences with USPS- waited in long lines to deal with counter people ho didn't know the law/ postal regs, and took their time about paging through a 2" thick regulation manual, all the while denying I could mail a rifle to an FFL; pissing off me, and the next dozen people queued up.
For some reason UPS, in my area, has generally poor service.
Fortunately, FedEx seems know what they're doing, and get most of my business when possible.

YES, service is different in different areas. I am on a first name basis with my local Post Office. They know the regulations, and if there is a question, I will sit with the Post Master and we both look it up on their computer. There good to me.

My second choice in my area is UPS, next, and I have an account with them is FedEx. For some reason I just can't find anyone with FedEx who compares with the other 2 in my area.

Dennis, you must be the only person that gets good service out of that PO!
I have gone round n round with them about simple mail delivery, they're pitiful!! I would never ship any rifle related item through them !! When I ship a rifle or action to my smith I use FedeX. Never used an FFL or had an issue. Been shipping myself for years.

Jim (Apache) and I both use the USPO almost exclusively. We both feel the same way. I guess different areas handle their business different. I try to stay away from FedEx in my area. Again, must be my area.

It is legal to use postal service to mail long guns to yourself, as if you are traveling to that address. The best way to handle that exchange is as was mentioned by earlier post. Find a smaller post office , preferably rural and discus the issue with personnel, then plan the next tip to ship your action. Its legal, buts its much more convenient when you have the cooperation of the people at the counter. I dont believe the package needs any special markings and that is good because there are anti- zealots that will attempt to screw your shipment up. My last shipment of this type was two complete rifles to my sons address in Ga for an upcoming pig hunt, to which I flew. UPS is also a reasonable carrier, but again I would contact personally before appearing with package- individual people can be agreeable or adversarial. Personally I wouldnt use Fedex to ship a broken rock or bag of dirt.
And yes insure to full value possible.

USPS rules are located here: http://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c4_009.htm

I have mailed or received hundreds of shotguns and rifles through the USPS. Fortunately my local USPS office knows the rules. My local UPS depot also knows the rules. FedEx in my area is lost!

2 or 3 day Priority Mail, Signature Required, & insured. I have never had a problem with the USPS. Just make sure you have the correct mailing address!

Unloaded rifles and shotguns are mailable. Mailers must comply with the rules and regulations under 27 CFR, Part 478, as well as state and local laws. The mailer may be required by the USPS to establish, by opening the parcel or by written certification, that the rifle or shotgun is unloaded and not ineligible for mailing. The following conditions also apply:
