Fee to ship FFL

My local Gun shop wants $100 to ship a rem 700 action to a smith. And $100 to receive it when it's done. Is that nuts?

Near criminal. Typical receiving fee in South Louisiana is $25-30. I have paid $50 to one store but only for convenience as they are located very near my home but they are the highest price in the area.

BTW...I thought I could mail an action I own to a gunsmith directly. Does it have to be FFL to FFL?

Some might request/want the transaction to happen that way, but it isn't necessary. As an individual, you can ship it to a FFL.

i would say they don't want bothered with it. They also wouldn't be bothered with my business any more either.

Also you don't need them to ship it to the smith. You can do it yourself.

Unless you are selling it, why the need for the FFL???

Phil.
So I DON'T need to send it through his shop. Sounds like he's trying to rip me. He said it's got a serial # it needs FFL. Just want to send an action to be barreled.

Call your gunsmith and ask how he/she wants to handle it. If they will accept it from an individual without a FFL, send it!

Call your gunsmith and confirm that it is acceptable for you to ship it to him for the work.

I ship to gunsmiths and have barrels chambered, actions bedded into stocks...etc. all the time, as I`m sure others do too.....

He's right to an extent, you may need copy of your smiths ffl to ship the action, required by the shipper. Others are right though, you can ship it.

As an FFL holder and gunsmith, there is no need to go through a FFL to send it to a FFL license holder. No transfer of legal ownership is taking place and will be returned to legal owner when work is complete. However he will need all your contact info for his records and he/she may or may not require a copy of your drivers license.

With that said there are smiths out there that will require you to ship through a dealer, thats their call.

Yep no need for an ffl. Thats only to buy a new gun. You already own it. Ups it to the smith.. and insure the heck out of it

I have been sending actions to be barreled, etc for about thirty years without involving a dealer. When I bought a firearm from someone, it went to my dealer, who charges me $25 to do the paperwork. I would suggest this guy doesn't want to be bothered, or needs a little cash.

Seems more than excessive and calls into question their perception of their customers, if I understand the situation correctly. Should be routine for you to find a willing and convenient carrier of your choice; USPS, FedEx, or UPS and ship it directly to your gunsmith. I have successfully used all of them. Normally when it is returned an adult signature is required, or at least that is my experience. As stated above, unless the shipment involves a change of ownership, no FFL is required.
