Fedex strikes again...

RANT!!!

Chris Silver shipped me three barrels, each one in a barrel box on Tuesday.
Box #1 end smashed open, barrel missing.
Box #2 box has a crushed section near one end. Barrel is there.
Box #3 box arrived, barrel inside, seems OK.

That's about standard for them.

I was sweating with the last gun I bought. Also the first I had go through the mail and was A LOT of money for me.
It went USPS and showed up in good shape.
Sorry to hear about that.

If the barrel can move in the barrel box, even barely, it is going to come out. It has to be stuffed on both ends to the point that it cannot move a bit. Also, strapping tape on the ends. Lots of it. I have shipped and received a lot of barrels, quite a few by fedex. None of them were damaged.

Lately I have been using a pool noodle. They are a buck at wally world. Split it and put the barrel in that. Then stuff the noodle in the triangular fedex box. It is not going anywhere.

Another tip is never use a round box or tube. FedEx will charge you extra for it because it will roll off their conveyors. Triangle boxes and pool noodles are the best way I have found to package them.

I've shipped a lot of barrels and fishing rods. Never had a problem. Bubble wrap the barrel or rod inside a PVC tube with nylon reinforced strapping tape on both ends holding it all together. I've even had them arrive with tire tracks on them and the product inside was pristine.

This is great advice.

After 20 years in the small package delivery industry, I always give the same advice: If you’re not comfortable with your package dropping on the concrete, at any angle, from at least 6’ off the ground, you need to package it better.

The three barrels all shipped in a fedex barrel box. Two arrived, safe and sound. The packaging is not the the Issue. The clown who dropped it is. Most people can tell the difference between a fourteen pound barrel box and an empty one.
Chris called all the way up the chain to the Main Office. Ten days from the day it shipped, they "found" the barrel, sitting on a shelf at the fedex delivery center ten minutes from my house!
I am headed over to check the barrel threads and muzzle crown and bring it home.

thanks for your input,

ISS

I guess I'm not familiar with the fedex barrel box. Will you post a picture of it? I will need some, for sure.

Easy solution...just buy 3 or 4 bbls at a time and tape them all together. You instantly have a triangle or a square! Problem solved! You're welcome! :D

In all seriousness, Douglas used to ship in very heavy round cardboard tubes with the ends flattened and bent over. That made an adjustable box length that really held the bbl tightly and it just couldn't come out like that. Not sure if they'd consider it round or square with flat, square ends and a round midsection...but it wasn't coming out.

Not only immobility
But
Cut a piece of plastic or plywood the shape of each end of the box, and tape it in place. Impact then will not perforate the box.

I have never had anything lost or damaged in shipping that I packaged, and I have shipped a lot of stuff. I am an over packer and an over taper. I probably just jinxed myself.
No, you just do it correctly. It is amazing how FedEx destroys packages from brute force. They have never lost one of mine but it better be 3 layers thick.

PVC tube is more expensive but really the best way to go
PVC caps have gone up in price for some reason
So I use a holesaw or something and cut wood block ends and screw them in

Having a barrel lost is very frustrating

I bought a used Savage 110 .338 Lapua off guns.com on the 14th. A label was created on the 14th in Eagan, MN US and I'm assuming it shipped out/was picked up on the 15th. FedEx shows no tracking until the 21st when they finally say they "now have the package" in WHITSETT, NC. As of the 24th the package is still in NC. WTF!!!

I've requested that guns.com cancel the order and let the shipper deal with FedEx. I should not be held responsible for the dealer nor FedEx issues or errors. Most shippers only allow the sender of the package to file a claim.

I used to work at FedEx and I can't even image what this package is going to look like after being thrown around for almost 2 weeks.

After Amazon pretty much destroyed the shipping industry as we know it, you really have to have patience. The last two rifles that were sent to me took over two weeks, and they broke the stock one one of them. It was packed in a hard case, inside of another cardboard box.
