Federal Ultra Match ammo

So here is the deal. I bought a CZ 455 varmint last fall. It shot pretty good, but not what I would call great. So I put a Whistlepig barrel on it. Now it shoots really good. It likes most ammo better than it did with the CZ barrel, but it really, really likes Ultra Match. We are talking about the .2's here. But of course they don't make Ultra Match anymore, and I'm down to my last couple of boxes. I have read that it is the same as RWS R50. Does anyone know if that is the truth?

(and yes, I have tried every kind of ammo I can get my hands on, and it shoots quite a few of them real good but not like the UM.)

Look on the inside of the box flap on a 50 round box of Ultramatch. Not that this means anything, but it says R50. I'm in the same boat with a Lilja barreled 455. Probably much more info on this over at Rimfire Central.

I have yet to test R50 in mine, but RWS Special Match shot ALMOST as good as the Ultramatch. I'm so sad I didn't buy more UM, and any that is left online is @.30 cents a round or more...ouch.

Yup, says R50_Stanze. I have no idea what that means. There are a lot of guys who shoot Lapua and SK or Eley, but few who shoot the R50. I'm hoping someone who has tried the R50 vs the UM will chime in. If not, I may have to have a go at it. The R50 is on the higher end price wise and I don't mind spending the bucks if it shoots as good, but don't really want to go on another ammo wild goose chase.

What color are the boxes? If it was Ultra Match made by Federal is will have dimpled cases in white and blue boxes. If is in the orange colored boxes its repackaged R50.

My CZs shot ultra match really well. They also shoot R50 really well. RWS Rifle match (black/yellow box) shot ok too. At our last smallbore silhouette match, a fellow shooter had some red box Geco. It has the RWS headstamp, so you might try that too. It is not expensive at all depending on what you get.

I bought a couple of bricks of R50 from an individual that were mixed lots, so I'm working through that sorting them by velocity.

This has come up before on rimfirecentral Federal UM22 made by RWS is not R50. That R50_Stanze is german meaning 50 round Box. General thinking on that forum is that um22 is rws rifle match and 922A is rifle target

Update: I have some 922A and checked it this morning and sure enough it also has the R50_Stanze on the end flap.

I sure have a bunch of it and it doesn't work with the new barrel I'll sell and it is the same lot. I sent a PM to beemanjojn and he never answered.... I guess he doesn't want it.... jim

Just to be clear, is it RWS R-50 that you are selling? If so, please provide lot numbers and per box cost. Thank you!

No it isn't R50, it did not shoot as good as the Federal Ultra Match 922a, I may have a half a case. if you need the lot # I will check...... jim

Thanks for your reply. Interested only in a particular lot # of the R-50. Good luck finding your perfect ammo.

OK, sorry I have not checked back in. I am out of state right now (Texas) and we are working 14+ hours a day, 7 days a week trying to get 8000 hives of bees ready for the summer. Have not had any time to spend in front of a computer screen.
The ammo my gun seems to like is the UM22, not the 22a. But the barrel is still new and I just have not had a chance to really try everything out there. With any luck things will slow down a bit by mid June and I will have time to shoot it. Right now I don't have more than a couple hundred rounds down the tube. Anyway, some good info here as always.

Yes I understand I and that is what mine is, UM22 in miss marked boxes and was marked 922a. I called federal and they confirmed from the lot number that it was UM 22. Maybe RWS did it by accident, who knows. jim

So I called CCI/Federal and asked to speak with someone regarding the Ultra Match ammo. A Retzer polite fellow that is an engineer for their rimfire ammunition admitted that it was made for them by RWS. He said that the UM22 designator is the ammo that passed the accuracy requirements of 1.0” outside to outside for 5 10 shot groups. I asked if he could point me in the right direction to finding more. After he giggled he told me that it has been out of production for 2 years now. He also stated point blank that if I could find some 922A, to buy all I could. When I asked why he said that it is the exact same ammo as UM22, but it didn’t make the cut. He said all 922A was between 1.0” and 1.2” @100. He said that RWS even packaged a large amount of UM22 in the 922A packaging because they ran out of UM22 packaging. He said it’s luck of the draw but most avoided the 922A because they are seconds. He recommended trying a few different lots and I might just be surprised. Anyway, so much for my rant and sorry to be so long winded. Hope this helps.

Beeman, pm me I might have a solution for depending.

That is what I found out also and if you give them the lot number you can find out if it was UM22 in the wrong boxes like the lot I have.... and it does shoot really good..... jim
