Federal Primers

I was wondering why Federal primers come in a box that is 3 times larger than 'normal' or the 'others'

Is this to prevent hording? Only so many will fit under your bed?

I must be bored! :}

Probably some marketing scheme - they want you to think that the bigger the box, the better the value for what you're paying. From a retailer's viewpoint though, the problem becomes one of shelf space - more space for less product.

They're the only prime that comes packed edge-up so the additional space may be a safety precaution but why 2/3 of the carton is empty space - underneath the tray - escapes me.

It's done to encourage the sale of RCBS hand-held priming tools with the square reservoir, both are owned be ATK). The next question is,'Why aren't CCI primers similarly packaged?' That company is also owned be ATK.

How mundane. Absolutely destroys the opportunity for creativity.

Right on.

I wonder how much extra we are paying for the unused portion of the box?

Maybe they could put something extra in it?

Well, I am still laughing at Gunsmonth's reply. Seems like the
gals in Italy are more well endowed. LOL. On the serious side this 'Old Hoarder' started building my needed supplies that I
was low on a few days after 9/11 occurred. When the last Presidential election was over I had all the primers, bullets,
powder & brass that I needed for several years, well before the fall election. Horder or just common sense for a long time shooter? All I have to say is that I am not the one that is out
looking for shooting supplies, but will still buy a bargin when it presents itself. The primers that I am shooting today, CCI & Federal Match Primers, cost me around $18.95 a 1,000. Sure beats
the prices today, if you can find any to buy !

Internet sellers, gougers) are currently commanding upwards of EIGHTY DOLLARS a 1000! These are THIRTY DOLLAR primers per 1000 at MOST! WAIT to PURCHASE: Primers will bottom-out - pricewise SOON! Hopefully, you have some rounds left for weekly practice. When people stop buying, gougers fade away into the woodwork like termites. I'll wait, Cliffy

I wouldn't count on the primer craze changing any time soon. I work for federal and have been trying to buy em but am told they are backordered. Still every week I put in an order.
I tried to stock up over the last 2 years, but could only spend soo much, and now I am down to a brick each of large and small rifle and really hating all the hoarders. I'm completely out of pistol primers woth only a couple hundred loaded rounds left. Put a lot of hurt on my shooting habits..

I have also pondered this question, but I never thought of the hoarding prevention aspects.
I called Federal about that many years ago when they first started using the big boxes and someone at Federal told me it was a 'NATO' requirement and that everyone else would have to do it too. The other brands never did change but Federal still has those giant boxes. I'm also trying to figure out why Alliant puts 1 lb. of powder in a can that will hold 2 lbs. No one else does this.

Vihtavouri did the same with their powders 1 lb and 2 lb were the same size, they have since changed though

According to Lee literature, Federal claims to be too sensitive to load via a Lee Auto-Prime Hand Primer. This prevented me from ever trying Federal primers. Is this true? I have never encountered a problem using MAGTECH or CCI primers. cliffy
