Federal Primers GM150 match will ruin my brass?

Hello. I managed to get some federal gold medal match 150s for use in my large pistols. I had always used the regular 150s (not the match) for my 45 colt loads with very good results. i have added 45 acp to my reloading dies and i am woking up a load at home (my range is not accessible to me at the present time due to covid). I just read one of the older treads on this forum that once I use federal primers in my brass, that I could no longer use any other primers as the primer pockets would be too large for the other primer brands. Is this correct? An old wives tale? Has anybody had this experience? Thank you for any help you could give me in this endeavor.

Tag, I'm interested to see responses; certainly that has not been my experience beyond the fact that a primer change can and should include another load work-up check.

I shoot whatever is available for pistol primers. Fed, Fed Match, CCI, Win.

Go with starting charge of powder whenever changing components.

yes I am awaiting responses also. maybe what I read was just a random response. nobody responded to that op. I want to know what everybody else says

Have you noticed any major differences in the primers? In my reading of previous posts, several ops were bashing federals as being too soft and coming apart when they seated them. This has not been my experience with my 45 colt loads. That is why I bought the federals.

Never had any issues with primers either. If I switched from CCI to Winchester, for example, I'd start out with the minimum charge. Then go up to my preferred charge.

pasote,
As far as the Federal #150 and GM150M are concerned, they are dimensionally identical, so no worries there.
I can't say for certain the Federal LPP dimensions are identical to other brands, but I have not seen issues when using Fed, Rem, Win and Fiocchi LPPs. SAAMI has dimensional specs on primer pockets, so I suspect all the manufacturers are pretty close.
Shoot well,
Paul

Thank you for your response. I feel better about the federals

All brands of primers have small differences in dimensions. CCI primers are the largest in diameter, so you can get an extra firing or two out of brass by switching to CCI from other brands when primer pockets get loose. When I tried to use CCI LP primers in new Starline 10 mm Auto brass, they wouldn't seat without severe deformation; switching to Federal LPP fixed the issue and I have the CCIs in reserve for use at the end of life for that brass. There are several sites on the web that have dimensions for various brands of primers, but I don't recall them offhand.

Same here never had a issue. With my revolvers i try to stay with federals but that is for a total different reason

Complete rubbish in regard to federal primers ruining your brass.
Now if you use federal primer and overcharge the load it could ruin your brass, but not the fault of the primer.

I used to hear the same thing about CCI's. The reasoning was they seat harder, so they must be bigger. The real reason they would seat harder was because they had a harder primer cup, The primer cup in a Federal generally runs towards the soft side compared to other brands. I'd use 'em and not worry.
