Federal LR Primers 210 vs 210M

For well over a year Federal 210M, large rifle match primers have not been available at the local shops I frequent. I've used them for years with in my 243 and 308 reloads with good results primarily with IMR 4064, Varget, and IMR/H 4895.

About a year ago I purchased a brick of Federal 210 large rifle primers and have been shooting them extensively in the aforementioned calibers in several different rifles. I swear I see no difference in performance.

Granted, my accuracy requirements are not as stringent as a bench rest shooter since I'm satisfied with 1/2 to 1 moa levels of accuracy in my hunting rifles. I wonder if any others shooters have noticed any difference.

I don't use Federal primers but can tell no difference between CCI 200 and BR-2 in .308 Win and .243 Win. I get equal accuracy and chrono numbers between the two.

I've been testing Federal 205's vs 205M's for 5 seasons now in all my bench rifle loads and most of the time the loads shoot smaller groups with the regular 205's. IMO it's a waste of money paying for the higher priced match primers. Just put the word match on anything and there will be a bunch of all day suckers shelling out good money for nothing.

Federal 210M's have been through a Q/C (Quality Control) inspection process. - I was told that basically the 210 & the 210M come off the exact same line using all the exact same compounds & components. - But Federal added a final Q/C step for what they are marketing as "Match Grade" primers. - I've used 210's, 210M's, 215's & 215M's and have not noticed any difference between the 210 & the 210M and same again on the 215's in the larger cartridges burning over 70 grains. - I believe that the only difference is the additional Q/C step. - When I load match ammo I'm doing my own close visual on primers prior to loading & I even weigh a few random samples & write it on the carton with the date with a sharpie just for the sake of having some kind of info on their weight. - I use both "standard" & 'Match" with the same level of confidence. - There are also several previous posts on our forum(s) in regards to Federal & other primers just as a FYI.

FWIW - I was told similar, and that the more experienced operators produced the match components to aid consistency.

FWIW - I was told the same by a buddy who lives by the plant. He added that the match lines are run by senior operators (more experience) to aid consistency.

There is a saying in manufacturing that you cannot inspect quality into a product. The only way you get a better product is better control of the manufacturing process.
I used Fed #210 primers about 30 years before Federal started marketing the #210M primers. I bought a brick of the match primers but they made no difference in my hunting rifles so I just use the standard primers when I can get them.
During the Bill Clinton shortage years Win large rifle primers were often the only primers available. I found them to also be very good so I am not too hung up on Federals.

Depending on the vintage of Federal &/or Match variant of primers will determine the manufacturer.

ATK/Blount Industries manufactures Federal Primers.

ATK,a DOD contractor is not your friend in the shooting sports.

Hey howdy,
Just bought some Fed. 210 LRPs and upon inspection noticed -obvious of course- that the red plastic seals covering the inside of the primers are not uniform. I won't use them until I find out why some of the red seals are missing around the flash port openings. Is this nonuniformity typica for Federal 210sl? Maybe they are old and have degraded seals? thanks

Fed Match primers are assembled by more experienced line operators at specific times/intervals. The components used are IDENTICAL to those used in non-match primers. That is straight from Federal. I've used many tens of thousands of non-match Fed 205s and 210s over the years and been very happy with their performance.

I'm glad I stock piled 5000 back when the BIG reloading shortage was going on. 210M and 205M. Found em at a gun shop that was going out of business. Now they're my reserves..

That "seal" was never uniform on the 210 match primers I purchased either but never affected performance.

Unless you are shooting BR accuracy, meaning in the .3 or less, you won't be able to see any difference at all. Its only when you get to that last .1 that you need to worry about using the BR primers or pointing bullets, trimming meplats and the so on.

That's what I thought - shooting bench rest would make me neurotic - glad I never got into that - it's bad enough being addicted to ground hog and predator hunting where reloads / rifles are more forgiving. :)

I DID A PRIMER TEST YRS BACK AT 1000YDS WITH A 300 WIN MAG BR RIFLE 30'' 1/10 TWIST WITH WOLF WINCHESTER CCI AND 215M 210 AND 210M AND THE 210M GIVE THE BEST GROUPS AND WERE MORE CONSIST FOR ME UNDER THE SAME RANGE CONDITIONS THAT DAY SAME BULLETS 185GR VLD AND RL-22 OVER ALL PRIMERS TESTED THEY SERVE ME WELL STILL TODAY

Almost didn't get my 215m brick from
Brunos. Saw the big Brown truck pull up from inside the house. Just as I opened the door, the driver was starting his backswing to lob the box the final 8 to 10 feet to the porch
Guess the look on my face said it all. They just don't make hazmat tags like they used to!
