Fed primers vs W-W Primers

Ran out of Federal Large Rifle primers,so did Sportsmens Warehouse here in Reno. So I bought W-W LR . With Fed its my known coyote load . I wonder if any difference with W-W primers ?

When the 1990s Clinton shortage began to ease I bought several thousand WW primers because they came back on the market first.
For general use they were very good and enabled me to save my Federal #210s for use in scoped rifles.
I used the WW primers in Mil surp, BPCR and plinking rifles and I was really pleased by their fit and performance.
My lot of WW primers was a little larger than my Federals so I used them in some very worn primer pockets that I would have normally have tossed.

I did a side-by-side test between Fed. 210Ms, CCI BR2s and Winchester LR primers in a 30-06/180s/Reloader 22 powder. The Feds and CCIs gave identical velocity and I could not see a difference in accuracy. The Winchester primers showed about 30 fps greater velocity with accuracy very nearly the same. Any difference I chaulked up to chance.

I think the reason you saw the increase in velocity was due to the fact that Win. primers were designed to reliably ignite Winchester BALL powders. Ball powders create a very dense load inside the walls of a cartridge. This dense load needs some real fire to reliably and consistently ignite that densely loaded powder.

I am trying out 1000 of the S&B right now and so far I am liking the results.

I'm hoarding my Wolf primers so using the S&B's: achieving Sd's around 4~5 with A2495 in a 308 behind a 168gr BTHP

To the OP: this primer testing reference http://www.castingstuff.com/primer_testing_reference.htm may be a little dated but the interesting column is the 'std dev'. The WLR's don't appear to be as consistent but are a little more powerful. The WLRM's are not only powerful but very consistent. I'm going to be trying them in my 6.5x284 with H1000.
