fed primer mis fire

I just got in to a case of fed 210m they misfire. Replaced them with winchester no more problem. I called federal today there customer service leaves a lot to be desired. They wanted me to ship them back so they could have a look at them. That would cost more than they cost to start with. I was told no one else ever had a problem. I will never buy another fed primer not because of the primer problem but because the customer service. Buddy

I have never had a misfire with Federal. I've had them with CCI and saw them with Winchester. Could be a lot of things causing this problem. Matt

Me neither! Could also be something else. Lets see if we hear about others having the same issue.

I am sure that almost every company you call will want the bad stuff back. How else would they know if it is bad or whats wrong. I did call Alliant one time I told them I had a lot of 22 that was too hot. They already knew they had a problem and sent they sent me new powder to replace it. They also said they would pay for repairs to my gun if I sent them a bill. CCI and Federal are owned by the same company and they are probably the most used primers. Matt

You may want to use a primer pocket reamer to square everything up and it helps to seat the primer with a squared pocket. You can feel the bottoming out better.

while nothing in the world is perfect. primers come close...

not likely it was the primer....
most likely the user....
check firing pin and spring,
are primers seated to the bottom of the pocket and then given a small(.002) crush in place ?

bite the bullet..it is most likely you...

Slow/Low firing pin velocity causes most misfires. Clean the firing pin channel.

That would be my first suspect to check out. I've often wondered how many guys actually clean their bolt face when cleaning their rifle. I know I do and inspect the firing pin hole to make sure crap hasn't gotten embedded in it. Besides cleaning the channel, I'd take a look at the firing pin spring as well. They don't often go south, but some models of rifles have a reputation for developing that issue which is why I know a couple of guys who carry extras in their go bags.

Was this one missfire or several??

I will trade you a bad lot of Winchester LR for you bad lot of Federal ;D

Had 3 blown winchester primers at mid textbook load. Thought maybe it was something I had done so i prepped more brass with the best inspection I could. 2 more blown primers and I am done with the WLR primers.

My savage was the first gun, remington 700 was the second!

Remington 700 SUCKS to blow a primer in! Even with safety glasses, i got powder burn on my face...not with the Savage!

Slow news day???....... or just want to rant against Federal?......this thread is 4 years old
I am wondering if his computer didn't do what mine did. I got on 2 different sites this morning and didn't recognize any threads. When I looked at the date one was 2 years ago and the other was 3 years ago. I figured it was something in my computer since it did it on two different sites. Matt

Inherent primer failures are very rare - with that said, I've been using Federal Primers for 20+ years - I did have one failure on a 205 match primer. When I examined the primer the failure was due to no priming compound in the cup. I was very surprised but never had another failure.

If Federal was not having many problems with the primer lot in question - I would swap out your brass if you have another brand to load up just to see whether they will perform. Also double-check your cartridge for excessive shoulder clearance or 'headspace". Leveling primer pockets won't fix what appears to be light primer strikes. Disassemble and clean/lube your bolt and consider a new spring. I'd bet they will shoot in your buddies' gun. If they do, offer him a trade. Assuming the worst - and you did get a bad lot, it helps to acknowledge Federal surely gets many calls about misfiring primers when it is really because of a gun that hadn't been cleaned in 20 years - or because a guy "oversized' his brass to the point no firing pin is long enough to find the primer. I see those issues at the range on any typical Sunday. I would find the Federal service reps' job to be quite tedious after a few weeks fielding calls.

Used federal for almost 40 years without a misfire. Recently switched to CCI just because federal is hard to find. Their customer service isn't the best and never has been
