Fclass scope options

I have enjoyed reading the threads on F class actions and stock, so I think we should have an F class scope thread to cover the whole package. I searched the forum and didn't find a previous thread that answered my question.

What are the best options for Fclass optics for MR and LR shooting and why? Has anyone compared the latest offerings from Nightforce, Leupold, March, Burris, and Sightron? Also, what is your favorite reticle? Which division are you competing in (F-TR or F Open)?

I see a lot of Nightforce BRs (especially the 12-42, which is the one I use), NXS (1/4 or 1/8 moa click), and the new Competition. I see fewer (but still plenty) March's and S & B's, probably due to their cost. I would say the Nightforce BR is probably the most common one I see. I occasionally see a Sightron, but less that I'd expect, given their price/performance ratio.

I like the NightForce BR Model with the CH3 reticule.. That reticule has a 0.088 dot in it. It is ULTRA PRECISE even at 1000 yards. On "cloud covered" days where the heat waves (mirage) is nil, I not only can CLEARLY make out the numbers on the target, I can hold inside them! It does NOT cover them up.. Additionally, ALL the BR models have 1/8 click adjustments.. I have 3 of that reticule and would like a 4th.. I also (on the 4th NightForce) I have the NP-2DD which is okay, however, it lacks considerably in my opinion as far as precision is concerned on distant targets..

Nightforce 2014 Competition with FCR-1 reticle. Clear glass, sturdy, fine lines on reticle are unobtrusive. perfect for F Class.

Started with a 25x S&B, then to an 80x March, but the new NF comps sure are appealing, especially at the price. 55x for around 2k. Hard to beat, and glass is impressive.

Made the mistake of looking through one at the range recently.....lol. I shoot F-T/R .308.

With any optics purchase the decision of the best product usually comes down to the price point your willing to pay. If your on a budget go with the Sightron, for a mid range budget the Nightforce is very nice, if money is no object buy the March

BCoates,

With scopes you generally get what you pay for. If you're into F-Class for the long haul, then get a good scope first up if you can afford it, because you will definitely get one (or more) down the track. I've been shooting F-Open for over 10 years and have had Leupolds, a Weaver, a Sightron, and most recently a Nightforce Competition. The Leupold Vari-X IIIs (6-20X and 8-25X) have only 1/4" clicks, and have some minor focus/parallax issues. The Weaver T24 is poor optically. The Sightron SIII 10-50X is heavyish and optics could be better. I decided to get either a NF Competition 15-55X or the March equivalent. I asked for opinions on this forum from people who'd used both, and the NF was preferred by nearly all replies, which included some private messages. So I listened, bought a NF Comp, and have no regrets. It pretty much ticks all the boxes for my requirements. The optical clarity and brightness have made a real difference for reading faint mirage.

Regarding reticules, my advice is to decide how you will use it before selecting one, because there are three basic modes of aiming in F-Class, and each is suited to different reticules. If you intend to wind the windage knob and aim at the centre of the target, then most shooters prefer a dot type reticule, because it is easy to see when a dot is in the middle of a target ring. If you prefer not to wind, and hold off on the target rings, then a plain uncluttered cross-hair is often preferred. Or thirdly you can hold off using tick marks of a known interval on the horizontal cross-hair, and there are various reticules which provide that. Regardless of what your aiming mode is, I would recommend reticules with a full width horizontal cross-hair to help with controlling canting - most target frames are level, and its quicker to check for canting error through the scope than checking a bubble every shot. Another important consideration is the mils/MOA decision. For F-Class its a no brainer, go MOA. At tactical matches they may talk in mils, but in F-Class most of us only know MOA, and mils are like a foreign language.

Good luck with your purchasing decision.

haha i made this same mistake the other day at one of our 500m fly shoots.. i use a nightforce NXS 12-42x56 with the 1/8 turrets on my 6BR (i use it out to 900yard F open also), and i had a look through a few blokes with the new nightforce competition 15-55x52 and yeah bloody great glass and looking at buying one now haha but with the DDR-2 reticle

Also important to me is that Nightforce supports F Class. They supply prize scopes at big matches. They are building a new parking lot at Ben Avery shooting range. This matters to me, and is a major consideration for me when I buy scopes. It doesn't hurt that their product is great as well.

Thank you for all of the replies. I currently have a Sightron 8-32x56 with MOA reticle on my F-TR gun, but I'm going to try one of the new Leupold 7-42x56 scopes for a little more magnification.

Does anyone have any experience with the Leupold scope?

I didn't see a single recommendation for that scope. Not questioning your choice. I am curious what made you choose that one?

I have one of the new Leupold 7-42x56. Used it in competition (F-open) and will be getting another one this spring for another build. My partner has a Nightforce Competition and is happy with it. Pick one...

I was using the same one you are (Sightron 8-32x56 moa) prior to the new Leupold. I'm pleased with my upgrade.

I'm a Leupold fan, and I got a good deal on the Leupold 7-42. My other choice was the Nightforce, but I was concerned about the short eye relief and the small exit pupil diameter.

It will be interesting to see how they hold up. I've had great luck with Leupold over the years and I think they make a great product. The 34 mm tube is another plus. I'm curious Mr. Coats as to the price you paid. I looked at them on Optics Planet (who I will never buy from again) and they were $1999. Same price I paid for a 2014 NF comp. If I had to choose between the NF and the Leupold, I would be hard pressed to leave NF. As Russell pointed out, Night Force has been super supportive of the F-Class shooting community. That might not mean much to some, but it carries a lot of clout with me. Keep us informed of the performance, and good luck on the up and coming year!

Not a pro here but I like my burris xtr 2 8x40. Optics our clear even in low light. Bo's text at 200 was spot on. Has zero stops returns to zero. Was leaning toward a night force for. $1000 more. Love the reticle I dial for the elevation and usually use the reticle for wind. Like I said no professional but I bang 12 inch steel with it pretty good out to 1000

I received the new Leupold yesterday afternoon. So far I'm impressed. One think I noticed is the scope is comparatively light weight for its size (34mm tube). I think it is around 26 oz vs. 28 oz for the Nightforce Competition. The reticle is similar to the MOA reticle on my Sightron, but the center of the aiming point is open vs. having a dot. I hope to get it mounted and sighted in this weekend. I won't have any matches to shoot until next year, but I look forward to getting some trigger time behind this scope to get used to the adjustments.

The Nightforce BR 12-42 with 1/8 moa clicks is the gold standard. Reticles are a personal taste thing. I've grown quite fond of the DD.

At $1400, you have to spend a bunch more to get only marginal gains.
