Favorite primers

So I did a little search and came up with a little info... How ever not exactly what i was looking for... So a few Questions,

1. What is your favorite primer in general for large or small rifle?

2. What do you find that makes a difference on what primer you use?

3. A little more specific.. What's your favorite primer for specific cartridge with out listing every cartridge?

I use mostly Federal primers, and more lately the Federal Match primers.
Most of my shooting is with "hunting" rifles and pistol.
I've used CCI, when i couldn't find the Federal. They work, but with the periods during shortages, i prefer not to do load workups again due to changing primers.

Since 1965, I've pretty much used them all, but far more CCIs than anything else. I've seen some differences doing accuracy comparisons, but if I was starting over today, I'd use one primer brand and work up all loads (handgun and rifle cartridges) for that brand. I doubt I would be disappointed. I'd probably go with CCI, but for no reason other than so many of my handloads have already been worked up using CCIs.

I use what I was taught with.
Cci 450.
I didn't see my 600yrd BR to do much different when I did test br4 primers.
Wish I could test feds but oh well ....
Use 400's to ff with because of ftf with 450's.
Gonna use br4 on my 6ppc ...

I use federal 215 M primers in my 338 lapua I use CCI 250 magnum primers in my 300 WinMag and I use S and B primers in my 6.5 x 2 84 Norma because that is what works in each rifle the best for me My second choice for the 65 284 is CCI br2 primers that is what I used originally until I tried the S and B and got better results

Mostly CCI, followed by Winchester, both standard and magnum.
Never really got into federal due to price, same goes for BR2/4 way to much for a cap.

Now given the current state of affairs, I notice the classifieds choked with ads wanting to purchase or trade for primer/powder.
I wish those folks the best in thier search.

So now I have to ask.
Are y'all reloaders or shooter's?
If your a reloader you'll take what you have at hand and make it work. It may not be the best load of loads for that particular firearm but you'll be shooting.
Now if your a shooter and dont enjoy loading and tuning as much as I do...
Might i suggest a light coat of oil before putting firearm away for storage.

Have a happy Thanksgiving

Like mentioned above. My 222 likes Federal GM's, My 6BRA likes CCI BR's, have some 450's but have yet to test. For large rifle primers, I like Federal GM's, but also use CCI BR's. In todays world choices may be hard to come by, so you may have to live with what you can get.

1. CCI Large Rifle Magnum Primers
2. Low and consistent numbers thru chronograph.
3. Tula LRM primer in my FTR. 308

CCI mag primers 450/250. Tried many others, but the difference for me is not noticeable on the target. One day a BR-4 will win and the next day a 450 will win. To make life easier, I just buy the Mag primer.

1. large rifle and Large rifle magnum I use federal GMM, Small rifle CCI BR4, 400, in bolt guns and 41 in ar15s
2. I started out using these and just stuck with it. I never really played around
3. FGMM for 308 and 300 win. Federal SPP For 9/40 but have been using CCI 550 since that's all I can get at the moment without any real issue.

CCI 450 for 6BR... Winchester non-magnums have worked well in all other applications. Currently running low on CCI 450s, so I’m trying Winchester non-magnums in the 6BR... no joy using same powder charge of Varget, trying IMR 4166 next...

For the past several years, use Rem. 7 1/2 for ARs and for several bolt guns in .223 use Win. WSR primers. Use CCI BR-4 for F-T/R mid-range Bolt Gun in .223.

I have used most of them and I find that they are all good, just depends what your rifle and load likes. Used alot of CCI 250's in my 25/06, then changed the barrel and got better accuracy with the Rem 9 1/2M. Same with other rifles I've re-barreled over the years. My only rifle that shoots with only 1 primer is my 30/378 Weatherby and that is the Fed 215. JME

Thanks for the input, if I have br2’s and federal match do you think one might be better than other ?

I use WLR for most everything & Fed. 215 for the 2 belted cases I still load for. There are other brands on the shelf for fine tuning if needed, but they aren't used often so are getting old. It seems that WLRM or Fed 215 works better than standard heat caps in 25-06 but still in early testing. Haven't touched a small rifle primer for a long time, but when I did they were usually Fed. 205M or RP 7 1/2s.

No not really-both good primers. Just don’t work up to max with CCI and substitute Federals without working back up.

Each primer will like its own load combo...Like ( Tim Smith's says )
Work up a load for each to see what works better.

I have no favorite primer. There is also no universal primer. Each cartridge and powder combo for a given bullet in a particular barrel will have a preference for a certain primer. Also, all primers become better than match primers after they are weight sorted.

I have had well tuned loads in different barrels with 105 Hammers. One liked BR-4s, the other liked 450s. I think the powder was Varget in both barrels but it was different lots of Varget.

Now I am not taking about a massive difference. Going from BR-4s to 450s took 200 yd 5-shot groups from 1/2" to 3/8". While that is a big deal in a LR BR rifle, it isn't in a hunting rifle.
