For 200 yd. target shooting slow fire from 3 or 4 positions I found the 30-06 that everyone else used to kick harder than I wanted.
I ordered a new M70 Varmint (26" heavy bbl.) in 1957 chambered for the .243 and I did very well with it using reduced loads.
Thus I ordered a new 40X in 6mm Rem. Intl. which is a 250 Sav. with it's shoulder pushed back and a long neck. I loaded the 75 gr Sierra over a light load of 3031. That was a winning combination.
What it took to win was superior aiming and not rifle accuracy.
I only mention it as historical fact. Today I might choose the easiest to get small 6mm which may be the 6mmBR?
Here is my 40X with a test scope on it. Those matches are shot with irons.
