Favorite 308 loads

Just bought a Savage model 10FP wanting to put together a consistant load. Will be using either a 155 or 168 grain berger match bullets. I use 4831sc for my 6.5x284 I was wondering if the same powder can be used for the .308, I have a lot of it and would like to be able to keep things simple in terms of products I have to buy.

I checked the 308 page and there is no listing for the 4381sc powder?

4831SC is generally way too slow for a .308.

TAC, N135, H4895, IMR 4895, Varget, RE-15, N140, those are your general 'main stays' to work with. I think if you look again at that .308 load page, you'll find plenty of loads with these powders, or others of similar medium burn rate.

A few specific applications,very heavy bullets in very long barrels) may call for slower powders such as N550 or H4350... but those are still a touch faster than H4831SC. I'm sure someone out there has used 4831 in a .308; it's just not a common powder because its generally too slow to make desired speed.

Maybee some one else will think diffrent but I believe 4831SC will be a tad slow for the 155-168 in a 308. No free lunch this time :,

The 308 page has good recipee's so you would do well to take note of whats on there. I have a M-24 Clone that likes Varget and 175 Match Kings. I shot it for the first time with Gold Medal Match,168gr) on Monday with very suprising results at 600 yards.

Im willing to bet that you will fill the case and get really slow velocities.

Yea, Man. 4831 would be pretty slow for the .308. You may have to bite the bullet and get some IMR-4064, RE-15, H-varget, H-BLC2 or something along those lines as far as burn rate goes. I have tried the new IMR-4007ssc and it is working really well for me loading from 150 gr. to 168 gr. bullets. Your loads will be much better than trying to work with a slower powder even if it did work out. Bill

Sound like i'm not going to be able to get away easy this time. I will just grab some varget and or the likes and go from there. Thanks for the info.
