Favorite 17cal cartridge?

I've had a few .17's. First was a 17CCM, then 17Jet, 17AH, another 17AH, and a pair of 17BR's. I love em all. Shot AH's more than any of the others.

A turn neck 17 Remington with .020 freebore will shoot very, very tiny groups with very little load development with H322 and 25g bullets around 3850 fps, never full length size the brass with about 21.5g.

The 17 Mach 4 is astounding in the 3 that I have had, all were single shots.

I have had a number of 17 Ackley Hornets, they are nice for colony varmints.

Neck turning the 17 Rem and Mach Four improved accuracy over non turned cases.

Not to derail, but I am getting a 17FB in a carbine contender. Avyone else shoot this and if so, what do you like for powder, bullets? It will be for groundhogs on occasion and certainly PD when I go again. I will be using 223 formed brass.

I use VV133, I found it cleaner than the less pricey powders but they work just as well. If you want the best bullets, customs are tops but Vmax and Noslers easily shoot minute of groundhog or PD. I use Nagels 25s and used Todd Kindler's 30 gr Kindler Gold boattails. Todd sold his bullet making operation to a gentleman in Texas and he's up and running with them. I'm still using the some of old KGs I was able to recently snag. I've found with this little cartridge, a tenth of a grain can make a difference. I'm running 17.3 of 133 with the 30s and a .010 jump. It'll hold minute of claybird to 400 yards when the wind's not blowing too bad.

Good luck to you, not so much to the hogs.:D

That little 17 grain TNT hollow point at 2525 ft/sec is impressive.

Famed TNT hollow point for the on-target performance
that varmint hunters demand.

I wish they would make it available for reloaders. The 18 grain Berger MEFs were awfully good.

~17 Squirrel~ is my all time Favorite 17 for what i shoot! Fox Squirrels, Groundhogs, Red & Grey Fox, Bobcat, coyote, crows and Big Spring Gobblers all are in trouble inside of 200 yards with this little over achiever and 20 gr V-Max at 3450 fps
