Fast Twist Swift

I have been thinking of putting together a 1-8 sporter wt. Swift so that I can
shoot heavier bullets like the 62 Barnes and the 75 gr. Horn. I have Ruger Varmint Swift so have dies, cases, etc. I assume I will need a long action, but do you think that Rem. 700 in .270 or 30-06 will work as a doner or is the magazine too long for the Swift cartridge to feed? If not which caliber would work best to rebarrel to the Swift with the least amount of problems? Also what velocities are you guys that shoot fast twist Swifts getting with the 62 gr. Barnes and the 75 gr. a-max.?

I have an 8 twist Swift in the works to be set up for Hornady 75 A Max. Just waiting on the barrel. Mine will be a HV profile Rock Creek barrel with a reamer from PT&G set up with a .254 neck diameter and .078 freebore with neck turned Norma brass. My action is a SA Rem 700 but I'll be single feeding them for LR varmint hunting and informal LR shooting.

You may be fine with rebarreling your Ruger with a nice SS barrel and that gun will shoot great.

As far as velocities with 75 class bullets I would think 3500 FPS can be achieved rather easily, but powder selection will be the key componet.

You Guys are thinking in the along same lines as me. I received a copy of bergers first edition reloading manual a few days ago. I was reading 22-250 section as I have a rem 700 bdl in 22-250. It says they wish manufactures would get with the program as a 8 twist barrel is where the caliber can really shine. I assume the swift is similar. Ihave a rem 700 action with recoil lug pinned to action. I am thinking of ordering a 8 twist shilen in 22-250 for the action a well. I have to finish the .243 barrel first. Let us know how the fast twist swift works out!

I had an idea for a fast twist .220 Swift at one time. Here's the link:

I ended up having a .22 BR done instead. It was done as a gift for my Dad as I had grown up hearing about how his old Swifts would do this and that. The BR does everything better and with better components. Just food for thought.

Good luck,
Steve

Do you guys really think that you need an 8 twist with the velocity that thing will have.I would think that a 9 twist might do it with less pressure.

I prefer 1:9 for the 75s. In the right elevation,
I wouldn't be shocked to see it work in a 10.
In fact, I'd bet it would, I'll test it out soon and let ya know.
