fast twist 223 or 14 twist 22.250

hi guys ime just toying with the idea of a fast twist 223 over a 14 twist 22.250. which do you think will shoot out the best at around 600. 700 yards..ive herd fast twist 22.250 can be hard to tune,i could be wrong, cheers in advance

the 22-250 using higher bc bullets for longer range needs a 12 twist minimum, I have one with 13 twist and it is great at 55-60gr but for heavier it is to slow.

the 223 12 has the same problem, the longer bullets need a faster twist.

A 14 twist in a 22-250 is really limiting. I had a 12 twist barrel put on mine, which is necessary to shoot 53 grain VMAX's well. It is capable of launching those bullets accurately at between 3850 and 3950 from a 26" barrel. To do much better than the 53 VMAX's, you have to go a LOT heavier and use a tight twist. I am successfully shooting 69 grain SMK's from my rifle @ 3570ish with Superformance powder. But there isn't a lot of difference in bc between the two bulllets. At least, not enough to offset the speed advantage of the VMAX. Trajectory of the two bullets is very close, with a slight advantage in wind drift going to the SMK.

If you plan to do high volume shooting, the .223 has the advantage. But, if ballistic performance is more important to you, go with a 22-250 with at least a 12 twist. My next barrel will be a 9 twist to give me more options and I am seriously considering going with the Ackley Improved version.

Simon -

Howdy !

+1 on the .22-250 for LR use.

I DK what your likely game animals are, but suggest you consider a 1-8 twist; and then you can use bulllets like the Hornady 75gr "A"-Max.

If you believed your likely ranges would not exceed 600yd, then I suggest use of a 1-10 twist; along w/ something like the Sieera 65SPBT.
For my wildcat .224" cal cartridge ( case capacity bewteen .22-250 & .22-250AI ) I went w/ a 28" 1-8 after I had shot-out the original
24" 1-14. Smartest thing I'd done, as it allowed me to exploit the full range capabilties of the gun.

223 ack imp in an 8 twist 24" or 26" would be the best of both worlds. Good barrel life (compared to 22-250 ) less recoil, less powder, cheap brass, what's not to like. Shoot the 53 vmax @ 3600 or 75 amax @ 3000. With all that said I must admit that I am fairly new to this cartridge but am very happy with it so far. I have a 22-250 in 1-12 and 1-9 but hardly ever use them.

ye thats what i was thinking pal with the fast twist 223,,i know the 14 twist 22.250 has more energy with it but out at 600 yards i do believe the the 8 twist 223 should out perform it,,,

I shoot a 7 twist Savage223 F/TR. She shoots the 80 Gr Berger Vld's great. I recently posted a 593/600 at a F/Class Mid-range shoot. I shot F/TR and got beat by only one open shooter. Love my peashooter.

The question is more along the lines of what bullet works best at 600 - a 52 grainer 22-250 14 twist, or a 77 grain Sierra - 223 fast twist. No matter what, the heavier bullet wins as long as we're talking 3 or 400 fps difference in muzzle velocity. So, if you are re-barrelling, go fast twist 22-250 and get the best of both worlds; more velocity, heavy bullet. I did a M70 Hart 28" in a PacNor Light Palma profile. Shooting a near max load of Superformance, with the supposedly crummy 62 grain M855 bullet, we can ring the gong all day long at 500 (max distance I can shoot it at) and cloverleaf them at 300. I'm so happy with the combo, probably won't bother working up a 77 grain load, and will reserve them for 8 twist AR loadings.

DELAWARE KEN: Great job! Some casual shooters may not understand the implication of "High Master"!
Basically anyone with that rating could shoot bug holes with anything! In competition, I could see where the reduced recoil of the 223 would be a major advantage over a 22-250!
