Fast Sling Hook

Hey folks, I've been using the 1907 style sling for years for prone shooting.
I've tried others, even the super wide heart breakers and such, and just couldn't get them set where a buckle wasn't in my way.

Anyways, I have the upper half of a 1907 on my shooting coat. I have modified it to the position and length I prefer and its been a reliable support. I have a detachable hand stop button on it for attachment to my match rifles.

I am wanting to add a "quick sling hook" to it as well. I think that's what they are called.
Id like to be able to hook into my M1A or 1903 Springfields, Garand etc. using this same sling setup.

Anybody have a recommendation on where to find some of these "fast sling hooks"?
Been having trouble locating one...and have been trying to find my other 1907 service rifle slings in all my junk...

thanks

That level of modification is not legal in Service Rifle or any as issued class competition although sling rules do seem to be frequently ignored in my experience.

I thought there were more options in the Smallbore world but they seem to all use the QD on the hand stop now like you already have.

I've used the parts of multiple M1 web slings to create my own system. One sling for the cuff with an extra strap adjuster as the female connection. Another M1 web as the main sling with the hook as the male connector. I don't know if any of that would be adaptable to 1907s.

Biathlon slings are all cuff and hook, they may be worth googling looking at even if just for ideas.

Maybe standard hardware store D-rings and s-hooks could be the basis for a home rigged system.

This is a commercial cuff and connect sling with several options for the connecting hardware.

Re-reading your post, maybe you still want to hook in at the rifle(not arm) end, just with different hardware? Then the M1 Web sling hook would probably work as well as anything.

That is a good point kzin, I didn't clarity that very well.
I wasn't intending to use this in a match, just my own practice.

In fact, my 1907 attached to my coat probably isnt legal for service rifle either, as the sling is not permanently fixed to the rifle. I shoot mostly NRA at this point anyways.

Like you stated, I am mainly looking for a hardware hook solution to make the quick attachment at the rifle swivel, instead of reattaching to entire sling to my arm each time I set up. Honestly, i have my current setup dialed in so well, I kind of hate to mess with it for fear I will mess it up!

Rig your service rifle sling in the Jim Owens no pluse configuration. It is very quick and easy to get it on and off the rifle and since you use all of the service rifle sling, no more, no less it is legal for service rifle competition. I leave mine on my coat all the time and it is there when I need it. It takes about five seconds to hook up or change. This really has nothing to do with pulse.

If you're shooting prone with a match rifle, you can do pretty much anything you want with your sling. With that said, the 1907 doesn't compare to a match rifle sling for adjustability or comfort in my opinion. There is one of the euro-trash small bore slings that doesn't use a buckle to adjust length. The sling attaches at different points to the QD. I can't remember who makes it but it's stupid expensive.
If you do the no pulse sling, you need special keepers otherwise they will stretch out and not work for normal 1907 setup.
Sling hooks still exist,, they have just kind of fallen out of favor because of the QD sling swivels.
Here is a link for a sling hook. I haven't seen the old wire hooks for a while.

Not an accurate statement.

You do not "need special keepers" and the configuration does not "stretch out keepers so they will not work for a normal set up". You only need one keeper that will accommodate three thicknesses of sling leather and you can use an already stretched out keeper or resew one for this requirement.

If you try this service rifle sling configuration like I did 30 years ago you will like it and never go back to the original configuration.

So a keeper that accommodates 3 layers of sling leather is standard then? Or are standard keepers meant accommodate 2 layers? Would a standard keeper need to stretch or be modified to use for the no pulse configuration?

The standard service rifle sling keepers accommodate two layers. The Jim Owens no pulse configuration requires that one keeper accommodate three layers so you can use a keeper that has been stretched by use that will accommodate three layers or you can remove the threads from a keeper and resew it so that it will accomodate the three layers. Jim made a video that shows how to rig a no pulse sling and he covers the keeper modification in detail. I have seen other versions of this concept but I saw Jim do this at Perry once in the about 1990 and I have been using it ever since. It works well for a match rifle also.
