Fast powder not as loud ??

Is it possible that some powders are louder than others? I know that sounds really stupid but I have noticed that when I use IMR 4895 my loads seem louder then some other faster burning powders. Let me know if im way off base.

Thanks in advance

Anything's possible I suppose, but for a relativistic comparison I think you'd need an independent observer at some distance, equipped with a sound meter to get a quantitative number in dB.

What you're hearing may be something related to the shock wave from escaping gasses being "peakier" for slower propellants in your rifle.

I know some powders make more of a muzzle flash, particularly whatever was used in some Greek 30.06 NATO loads I've shot in my CMP M1) but that's pretty obvious compared to what a more common load produces.

Slower powders can have a higher pressure at the time the bullet exits the bore, this results in the louder pop and higher recoil.

From experience with handguns, I know for a fact some powders are lowder than others. Unique for one is much louder in a 357 Mag than say 2400.

As to rifles, I cannot tell a difference, but the again, I can barely hear it thunder anymore out of my left ear ............
