We are expecting a big storm in this area later today and through the weekend. So I figured since I did not have much work to do, I would take the morning off and do some calling.
I headed out to one of my "honey holes" that usually produces a yote or two...and I was not disappointed.
It is about a 45 min hike to this spot and by the time I got there the wind had picked up a bit and it was spitting a little rain.
Got set up and hit the call (DSG cottontail) At about 30 sec into it here comes coyote number one running flat out straight at me/the call. I woof...I yell....nope...not gonna stop.
He blows by the call and is still heading right at me. At this point it is self preservation! He is so close it is just point shooting and I let go with a double tap and he folds up at about 15 yards from me.
Pup distress is playing (thank you fox bang) and my heart is beating a little and I see coyote number two bounding in. He pulls up about 80 yards out looking around. He is broad side to me so I let go with another 50gr Vmax. Bang flop...coyote number two is down.
I let the call play for another 5 min and call it quites. I can hear another coyote barking a good ways off.
I guess with all the racket, he did not want to come play.
I pack up my gear and hike back to the truck. By this time the wind has picked up so I decide to head home and finish the morning with a supper fast double.
