Coyote hearing.

I have had coyotes coming in to a call, stop solid and smell my Sardines in Oil sock from 300 yards out, always know and be able to see down wind.

You could read the expression on their face, "I got to get me some of that!"

I've seen coyotes pretty much flip a bitch in their own hide when they hit my trail where I'd walked into my stand.

When we walk a fairly short distance from the rig to a spot, it's easy to disregard the direction we've approached from. That's a big mistake though because a smart coyote will usually try to approach down-wind of the call.

I'm about 90% accurate in predicting the direction a dog is gonna approach from, but I've been made the fool several times.
We've killed three coyotes from one stand a few times, but one time called five in at once and never got any of them. jd

In this area a lot of time in the spring they are paired up and the male comes sorta straight in slowly with the female in the lead and flanking off 50yds or so to get behind the call and see if it's a trap. No problem getting the male but a lot harder to get that female before she yelps and gives you away.
Here they are in the timber and your shot can be a second or less before they are behind another tree, and when they do take off they will keep the tree between you and them most of the time.

Blue,

What county are you in?

At 150 yds they can easily hear a light squeak from your lips. Called in coyotes while deer hunting this year on two different occassions from 150 yds with light lip squeaks.

They can hear a mouse walking under a foot of snow in a tunnel.

I also heard speculation that a foxes feet are exceptionally sensitive and may play a role in the hunt.
I'm guessing these senses may apply to coyotes and dogs.

I am based in Union county Sieg, but i have always had to see whats over the next hill.
Beautiful area. The family ranch south of Echo has a couple coyotes on it. :) Also have family in Hereford and Baker City.

Our group is heading over to rat hunt this year on a ranch just south of Rye Valley.

This is from 2005 hunting Rock Chucks there.

I lived down in the vale, willow creek, brogan area back int the late 70's and can't count the hunts from there up to unity, hereford and over the hill towards baker. Of course there was still the gas station at ironside then. There wasn't just about anything from there to unity at that time, but now it looks pretty crowded with little "ranchs" all along hwy26 now.

They don't hear very good, I know this because the other day I turned up the volume on my call and they still couldn't hear it. I know they didn't hear it cause they didn't come in. Merry Christmas to all.

That was exactly what i thought until someone pointed out not so politely ... that the reason they didn't come in was because i had made them deaf and they couldn't hear anymore. To which he then added, ... you dumb a$$!
To make it worse, he was right.

0ur two Macaws have better hearing than the family dog.. They hear and react to a visitor noise quicker than her. l wonder if it is the same with birds on the prairie?

Only yotes l've killed were those COMING to the sound of gunfire and the prospect of a free meal..

And another thing: not only can they hear you from incredible distances, but they also know EXACTLY where you are.

I've spotted coyotes coming from over three hundred yards, and since they were coming steadily, I quit calling. They will continue to exactly where I am, looking intently for the rabbit or whatever food they anticipate. They don't miss the location of the sound by a bit. jd
This is very true and the same goes for rattling bucks, animals are amazing at pin pointing the exact location.
